Dance with Camera at ICA Philadelphia

11 January 2010, 16.09 | Posted in Art | No comments »

curated mag - Dance with Camera at ICA Philadelphia

On view through March 21, 2010, Dance with Camera brings together works on film, video and still photography to investigate the crossover between artists and dancers. The items exhibited begins in the 1960s, with work by Bruce Conner and Bruce Nauman. Dance with Camera then explores how video artists of the 1960s took to dance as a subject.

Through all, documenting dance is never the primary concern. The artists presented capture movement, shape, and the dynamism of dance. The synergy between artistic medium is strong, the balance of still and video helpful in setting a cohesive tone for the exhibition.

ICA Philadelphia is located at 118 S. 36th Street, Philadelphia, PA.

Installation views follow.

Video | Selectism/Highsnob “Thanks for 2009″ Drink Coasters

Our brothers in arms (Highsnobiety and Selectism) produced a fantastic video for the making of our Christmas gift. The full behind the scenes of design and production of custom coasters.

Michael Dacey over at Repeat Press inside the Fringe Movement Studio in Somerville, MA worked up these custom two sided coasters for Highsnobiety and Selectism.

The coasters were run off on Michael’s early 1966 Vandercook SP20 Press using coaster stock. Each sheet housed four coasters which were then cut on a vintage Challenge Advance Guillotine Cutter and corners were rounded using a new old stock 60’s Lassco Corner Cutter. The finished coasters were then hand banded and glue to form.   Not surprisingly, we ran out of the inital run but plan on pressing more in the New Year. Many thanks to Michael for an amazing job.

The video above was shot, edited, and produced by Steve Schinnerer/Iloveqp also working out of the Fringe Movement Studio in Somerville, MA. We cannot thank Stebs enough for his time and energy in making this clip for us. (music: The White Stripes – “I Fought Piranhas”)

Artistic Process

Art Babble has a new series of videos on process up and ready for viewing. For ease, I’ve posted them here. Process always fascinates me, and exploration of how things are done adds (for me) a massive amount to any discussion or exhibition of a particular artistic medium.

Above is a video on the wet collodion process, popular from 1850-1880. After the jump videos on making a Spanish polychrome sculpture and the art of gem carving.

One of the least annoying videos on this subject I’ve seen. Is it art? If it provokes engagement, then in my book it is indeed. Full artist statement on Wooster Collective.
