There is revolution afoot in the world of Typography. Defenders of the font Comic Sans have banded together to try and bring a better understanding and appreciation to the often maligned type set. Casting recognizable brands and logos in the infamous type, the people running Comic Sans Project might just change some minds. It’s not just the font of the family news letter anymore.

Just months before the late and undeniably great typeface and logotype designer Doyald Young passed away, Lynda.com released a short documentary on the man behind some of our culture’s most well-known logos and letterforms. Young also talks about his childhood; he was a high school dropout who read profusely, and dabbled in other jobs before eventually found his passion and career in typography. The video not only offers an enlightening conversation with the man, but also gives viewers visual examples of some of Young’s timeless works.

Scotland’s Recoat Gallery hosts the UK’s first comprehensive “Graffuturism” Exhibition titled “Rudimentary Perfection” from July 2, 2011. Curator Mark Lyken pulls together an impressive group of notable international artists linked by their innovative spirit & shared graffiti heritage.
Each of these artists has ventured down unique paths in their post graffiti output and each offers a radical take on expressive, figurative & letter-based abstraction. These works, while differing in approach & execution retain the sense of movement, assured marks & imperfect beauty of graffiti itself.
The participating artists include SheOne, Duncan Jago, Jaybo Monk, Matt W. Moore, Augustine Kofie, Nawer, Morten Andersen, Poesia, Derm and Mark Lyken.
On view to July 31, 2011.

Admittedly, this is light fare. However, the one line greetings and suggestions are nothing short of amusing. Thanks to BBC for the heads up.
More one line madness after the leap.

IFF’s next project is in part a celebration of the centenary of Roger Excoffon (1910-1983), the Marseille typographer & graphic designer responsible for numerous classic fonts such as Banco, Mistral, Antique Olive, Choc and others. IFF has commissioned a number of artists and designers to create new text posters which relate, utilize or appropriate some aspect of Excoffon’s work. The resulting posters will be displayed around Marseille and also as an exhibition.
The artists exhibiting include Fiona Banner, Martin Firrell, Ryan Gander (above), Liam Gillick, Stéphane Le Mercier, M/M(Paris) and Laure Prouvost.
Exhibition runs from January 8 to 22, 2011.

The fifth and final in BIS Publishers‘ amusing series, “Ridiculous Design Rules,” Never Use More Than Two Different Typefaces! has just released. Not surprisingly, Never Use More Than Two Different Typefaces! is about ‘ridiculous’ rules in typography; a joy for graphic designers and everyone who has anything to do with designing texts.
Great holiday gift for an overly serious type fanatic.
More looks at the book after the jump.

“Ebon Heath has created an edition of prints based on the four acts of his recent performance project, A Typographic Ballet, at MADE in Berlin. He hopes to capture the typographic energy and content from the performance in each of these designs to create an object that can be shared and seen daily. Each of the four designs play with light and shadow, positive and negative space, and a typographic lace that has form, function, and beauty.
Each of the four prints are an edition of 20 and may be purchased individually or as a set of four. Each of the four prints are laser cut from a single sheet of 60 x 95cm, 300gm white paper that can be mounted on white or color sheet provided. The fragile nature of the print requires they must be framed for display (with print floating to illustrate depth).”
The folks at MADE are also responsible for the fine video above. The prints are found after the jump.
