If you thought you couldn’t fall anymore in love with Swoon, here is another chance. The Music Box, her interactive musical shanty town collaboration opened in New Orleans October 22nd. A second performance will happen on the 19th of November. And a third will take place on December 10th. A press release from the show sums it up as such:

Visitors can interact with this musical shantytown’s singing walls, heartbeat-triggered percussion machine, organ staircase and weather sensitive oscillators. Three monthly live performances are bringing together stellar groups of local and international musicians to play orchestrated works on these “instruments.” Quintron, the musician and local legend, conducts this experimental shantytown orchestra.

The Music Box is an important and exciting prelude to the building of Dithyrambalina, an interactive sound sculpture in the form of a permanent three-story house. This project is being led by the influential street artist Swoon, who is known for her community-driven collaborative endeavors. Swoon has designed the house, but will rely on collaborating artists to bring the Dithyrambalina to life. via: Juxtapoz.

2011 shotbyjake.com 3944 540x360 Video | PBS Arts Off Book piece on Swoon and Olek

PBS Arts Off Book blog, recently produced a video documenting two of our favorite female street artists; Olek and Swoon.

The street is a space where art thrives, and a place where artists can shape the public aesthetic. Olek, a sculptor whose medium is crochet, and Swoon, a mixed media artist, disrupt daily life with work that creates wonder, emotion, and humor. Equally at home in museums and galleries, both artists also create installations that challenge the formats of traditional art spaces. With powerful layers of meaning, beautiful aesthetics, and using unique media, these two prolific creators are pushing the boundaries of contemporary art.

Swoon exhibit at the ICA Boston

Swoon Cairo4 Paris 2010 Swoon exhibit at the ICA Boston

Now open at the Boston ICA: Swoon. The exhibit is titled “Anthropocene Extinction.” The ICA website’s description of Swoon reads:

In both her art and her own life, Swoon is deeply engaged with social and humanitarian projects. During the 2009 Venice Biennale, she and a crew of 30 other artists and friends sailed SWOON boats made of reclaimed materials through the canals of Venice—creating new purpose out of what was cast aside. Her latest endeavor, the Konbit Shelter Project, is a sustainable building project assisting Haitians who lost their homes in the devastating 2010 earthquake. Working alone or in collaboration, Swoon’s work is often about forming a community in order to practice what she refers to as a “real world” engagement.

More looks after the jump.

Swoon’s Musical Architecture for New Orleans

01 July 2011, 15.30 | Posted in Art | 3 comments »

swoon 01 curatedmag Swoons Musical Architecture for New Orleans

Swoon’s love of New Orleans is well documented. The artist’s latest effort is a fund-raising drive to turn an idea for musical architecture in the Crescent City a reality.  Through Kickstarter, Swoon articulates the plan -

From the salvaged remains of a decrepit Creole Cottage, the Brooklyn-based artist Swoon has re-imagined a permanent, interactive sculpture for the Bywater neighborhood of New Orleans. We call it the Dithyrambalina.  It will look like a house, but it will function like a musical instrument. A growing group of local and national sound artists are working towards interactive instruments that can be built into its walls and floorboards so that visitors can bring the house to life through their touch. Ultimately, musicians will be invited to play the house, performing orchestrated works at block parties for their friends and neighbors. This project is for the love of New Orleans – its architecture, music, culture and its people.

Swoon has designed the look of house and we have formed coalitions with everyone from architects to salvage suppliers. The next phase of our project is to create instrumentation for the house. This Fall our sound artists will publicly test their prototypes in a temporary installation we are calling The Music Box – A Shantytown Sound Laboratory.

A pledge does more than simply push Swoon’s project forward, at various levels there are some fantastic gifts – including tours of the finished site and at the $3000 level a limited Ice Queen print.

View the prints and the Kickstarter film after the jump.

“Renowned for her delicate paste ups and large scale installation work, New York artist, Swoon, recently made a trip to Melbourne for her first Australian exhibition, Thekla, at the Metro Gallery in Armadale. The petite artist was run off her feet when we visited her in the gallery, but she managed to sit down with us to chat about her upbringing, her artistic process and future projects. In this nice little film by ACCLAIM lads, Louis Mitchell and Michael Danischewski, she spoke extensively about space, context and participation and how these inspire and impact her work.”

The Great Outdoors at Woodward Gallery

great outdoors front The Great Outdoors at Woodward Gallery

The Great Outdoors operates with a nice premise and with an often under explored theme of the movement of street art indoors. Opening on May 8 at Woodward Gallery (133 Eldridge St, New York, NY), the exhibition recognizes the influence of the outdoors on many urban bred artists. Royce Bannon, Darkcloud, Michael De Feo, El Celso, LA II, Kenji Nakayama, Neckface, Lady Pink, Matt Siren, Stikman, and Swoon have been charged with responding to their environments… a frequent theme in all their work, but here done as an attempt to reflect further on what happens to outdoor installations when their creators move to more institutional spaces.

The Great Outdoors runs through July 24, 2010. A preview follows.

Opening on April 10, 2010, SUBject/subJECT features over a dozen female artists handpicked by gallery co- curator Deedee Cheriel. The artists collectively comment on gender roles – specifically forming a dialogue about role models, self-image, and the messages protected by women in both alternative and mainstream media. The exhibit questions what women are supposed to “say” in an age where “equal rights” might minimize gender driven subject.

Ten percent of all sales from the show will go to the Los Angeles Downtown Women’s Center. SUBject/subJECT will run through May 8, 2010.
