From the press release -
Subliminal Projects is proud to present its opening fall show 3 Kings, on view September 17 through October 8, 2011. In classic NYC Subway Graffiti lore, a “King” is one who has achieved the most recognition for not only excellence in style but for the mark they have made on the culture. For over thirty years these “3 Kings” have been at the top of the game. Their history-making rise to international prominence from the subway tunnels of New York City was recently chronicled in MOCA’s “Art In The Streets” exhibition. At Subliminal Projects they will be presenting their contemporary work created exclusively for this exhibition. Please join us at a reception for the artists on Saturday, September 17, from 8-11p.m.
Fab 5 Freddy is well known as Hip Hop’s ambassador to the world. His early work with Blondie on the hit “Rapture,” his creation of the seminal film “Wild Style” (directed by Charlie Ahearn) and his groundbreaking shows at the FUN Gallery brought graffiti art, rap music and break-dancing to the big stage. He would go on to co-produce and host “Yo, MTV Raps!”, the first show to regularly feature this culture on TV. Starting with his famous “Campbell’s Soup Can” subway car homage to Andy Warhol, Fred has been at the vanguard– and his new work is no exception.

The exhibition runs through June 4, 2011 at SUBLIMINAL PROJECTS in Los Angeles.
Mary Jane Ansell, Sean Cheetham, Ron English, Benjamin Bryce Kelly, Miles ‘Mac’ MacGregor, Ann Marshall, Stephen Wright, and Jonathan Yeo are featured.

Subliminal Projects is gearing up for a big one. On January 22, 2011 the gallery will open The Big Picture: Mark Mothersbaugh & Shepard Fairey focusing on the duos artistic and philanthropic activity of the DEVO frontman and famed street artist respectively.
As artists, Mark and Shepard create work that demand the viewer’s attention, drawing them into a world where scale is pushed to the forefront. From several feet back, Shepard’s work tells one story while, up close, the intricate patterning tells another. The symbols in a Shepard print provide a contextual framework and the elaborate detailing reflects a careful attention to craft. Mark’s creative process begins on a small scale. His postcard-size illustrations and paintings often serve as the initial step in his creative process, from which he then pulls imagery for his larger work. These highly personal postcards are created on an intimate scale and, once enlarged into large-format works, the viewer is invited to step into Mark’s whimsical world. In both cases, it is the carefully thought out details that make The Big Picture.
The Big Picture will run through February 19, 2011.

Subliminal Projects invites a big crew to Wreck the Walls for the gallery’s latest group exhibition. Opening on December 11, 2010 “Wreck the Walls includes works by over 30 artists, established and emerging, who have helped shape the artistic spirit influenced by their times. Rebellious pioneers of their artistic genres, who come from a background where there are few rules and anything is possible, have helped pave the way for a younger generation of artists who are influenced by their prevailing subculture. From gallery to street art, this show expresses each artist’s divergence and individuality, offering a visual cornucopia of painting, photography, mixed media, works on paper, digital prints, sculpture, graphic design, and illustration.”
Show runs to January 15, 2011.

The packed house took in the lovely sights including every variety of Fairey’s printed work including prints on wood, metal, paper, album covers, and collage on paper. Living Proof Magazine was on hand to document the work, the crowd, and atmosphere of Shepard Fairey’s first ever solo exhibition at Subliminal Projects.”

Opening on July 10, 2010, The Homebody does more than just present new works by Jim Houser. Previewed last week, Skullphone’s Digital Media show at Subliminal Projects opens this weekend. The video gives a sense of the artists process.
|

New paintings by Skullphone hit the walls of Los Angeles’ Subliminal Projects on June 5, 2010.
Digital Media finds Skullphone questioning the use of digital signage in his hometown of Los Angeles. His paintings are time consuming projects, using a dot-grid system on black aluminum panels. As a fixture on the LA street art scene for over a decade, Skullphone’s new paintings are somewhat of a departure from his previous output despite clear connection to the urban environment that has always inspired him.
Digital Media will run to July 2, 2010. Subliminal Projects, 1331 W. Sunset Blvd, Los Angeles, CA.
Preview continues after the jump.
