Before there was Banksy hype, there was a piece of the artist’s work on a wall many people passed and probably didn’t think twice about. But after layers of wall in a Berlin art gallery were stripped away as part of an installation by Brad Downey,a Banksy work with five soldiers, winged angels and smiley faces was uncovered. Downey, a Berlin-based American artist, is showing an exhibition titled “What Lies Beneath,” and focuses on layers of paint.  Downey, who also took part in the 2003 exhibit with the anonymous street artist, remembered Banksy’s work and wanted to uncover it for his 2011 project.

Head of the Kuenstlerhaus Bethanien gallery, Stephane Bauer, is unsure of what will happen to Banksy’s work once Downey’s exhibit ends on October 23rd. It could go back to hiding behind newer works, unless someone buys it for a presumably large amount of money.

Gltn has the news of Mark Gonzales’ latest exhibition. Hung in Sao Paulo, at Cartel 011, the collected material balances drawing, stencil, and witty remark. Gonzales also unveils new fabrics and as with rest reveals some humorous personal quirks.

Friends with Knives is a group show presented by Dirtypilot.com and Paper Monster opening on September 18, 2009. The aim is to highlight a range of stencil graffiti styles at a global level bringing together artists from the USA, Germany, Australian, Iran, and the UK. Artists include PaperMonster, Ben Slow, HAHA and more.

Stencil artists Above has been in Madrid for the past two weeks. During the stay 3-site specific pieces were created. These reflect local musical traditions and the sounds and emotions of humanity. Above is set to travel through Germany next.

No Walls Gallery releases a limited set of works from the acclaimed Steven Spencer today. The East Londoner’s series “Flags” explores themes of nationality and military power. The are produced through stencil, spray paint, and hand finished brush work.
