La Gaîté Lyrique celebrates skateboard culture with it’s first Summer exhibition. Public Domaine: Skateboard Culture expresses the freedom of the sport through music, graphic art, cinema, photography, fashion, ad more. The intent is to give voice to those who’ve forged unique lives through their interaction with skateboarding. Runs from this weekend though August 7, 2011.

One example of skateboard culture manifest in art  is Mark Gonzalez, skater and artist, who has released a new book Instead of Eros Avenged. The launch coincides with the exhibition and finds Gonzalez using Jerry Chadwick’s poem (of same title as book) as a starting point for photographs that capture the culture of skateboarding. The book is released via Nieves.

Images of Instead of Eros Avenged follow.

Available from Colette, the Douglas Coupland collection for Roots actively celebrates Canadian artistic ingenuity and an affinity for the great outdoors. Coupland, famed as a novelist, offers quirky graphics to leather goods, knitwear and more thoughout the full scope of the limited edition line.

Here, his skateboards are most relevant. “Motherboard” has clear connections to the computer and digital life. The second board, “Crystalboard”, employs a more colorful, abstract pattern. Both are handcrafted in Canada.
