Beginning with the tag in the early 1990s, L’ATLAS went on to study Arabic calligraphy with classic and modern masters in Morocco, Egypt and Syria, taking particular inspiration from traditional Kufic calligraphy – the oldest calligraphic form of the Arabic scripts. The artist’s work has evolved towards a nameless writing which unites elements of painting and the tag with calligraphy.

The exhibition Punitions runs through May 28, 2011 at Berlin’s Skalitzers Contemporary Art gallery and features a series of paintings inspired by the punishments of contemporary graffiti and the traditional form of Kufic calligraphy.

TIKA’s eagerly anticipated second solo show in Berlin opens on March 26, 2011. Growing up between Zurich, Cologne, Cairo and Brussels, TIKA has been drawing, painting and creating since a young age, and first glued hand drawn circus posters to the streets at the age of ten. Her work can be seen on the streets of South Africa, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, US, China, Thailand and throughout Europe.

Currently living and working between Zurich, Berlin and Rio de Janeiro, with influences ranging from Aztec to graphic art, TIKA works across a number of mediums including woodcuts, wood prints, wood burnings, drawings, scratched and painted canvases, silkscreen prints, stickers and blackbooks. Her work has been shown in numerous exhibitions around the world, with solo shows in Cape Town, Rio de Janeiro, Berlin, Vienna and Amsterdam.

TIKATHEK, a fusion of the artist’s name since 2003 and the German word ‘Bibliothek’, draws from a diverse selection of works from her last few years between Europe and South America, culminating with a recent three month residency in Cape Town.

The exhibition will run through April 23, 2011.

From the gallery -

Gretscher’s paintings are a seductive balance of spontaneous energy drawn from his work on the street and the reflective poise with which he addresses the questions and absurdities of human life. One of the most exciting young artists working in Berlin, this is a show not to be missed!

The exhibition also inaugurates the gallery’s new upstairs exhibition space.”What Does it Mean to be Human?” will run to July 24, 2010.
