Olson, Olson, Recine and Associates at NYEHAUS

Alexander Richter 1773 Olson, Olson, Recine and Associates at NYEHAUS

Last week at NYEHAUS, an ambitious concept show launched featuring work by Alex Olson, Steve Olson, Yaniv Evan, Bob Recine, Curtis Kulig, and Phil Frost. Their collective brand of lawless art is fueled by counter and subcultural connections (skate, surf, etc.) branded against the swell of the corporate tide. Father and son, Alex and Steve Olson both blend skate and punk with their choice of media – Alex working in photo collage and his father presenting his trademark text work. The duo are complimented by Bob Recine’s fascinating mixture of popular culture media and real human hair. His are assemblages that prompt questions about fashion and self. Yaniv Evan provides vintage styled hand-painted signs and a magnificent motorcycle. Curtis Kulig, famed for his LOVE ME sculpture, adds his peculiar twist, and finally Phil Frost’s fantastic patterned work rounds out the firm.

Originally envisioned as a solo showing for Steve Olson, the artist has instead smartly curated a group show that offers distinct takes on art with the same aim. Not to be missed.

Olson, Olson, Recine and Associates runs through July 29, 2011.

Gerry Judag “Jaguar E-Type” Sculpture

jaguar 01 curatedmag Gerry Judag Jaguar E Type Sculpture

With a track record of outstanding large-scale sculptural installations at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, Gerry Judag didn’t disappoint with his model of a “Jaguar E-Type” at the 2011 event. Designed in 1961, the original E-Type wowed at the Geneva Motor show that year… even Enzo Ferrari conceding that Malcolm Sayer’s performance vehicle was “the most beautiful car ever made.” The automobile is perfect fodder for Judag’s sculpture, sitting on the nose it also functions to provoke a sensational response in the contemporary viewer.

The Festival of Speed closed on July 3, 2011.

Regular readers will know how much we like a good book carving around these parts. Australian artist Kylie Stillman is an exceptional example, her work often spreading over several volumes to form richly articulated images. Represented by Utopia Art Sydney, Stillman studied as a painter before moving on to book carving. (via Bautiful/Decay).

Pure Clay and Contemporary Clay at RH Gallery

2011 shotbyjake.com 9392 540x360 Pure Clay and Contemporary Clay at RH Gallery

Currently on view at RH Gallery, Pure Clay shares the work of Young Sook Park and Lee Ufan.

Young Sook Park and Lee Ufan first met in 1979 at Park’s gallery in Insadong, Seoul. United by a shared aesthetic rooted in the belief that there is great complexity in simplicity, their initial collaboration produced a minimalist cobalt blue brushstroke that was applied to a series of dinnerware including plates, bowls, tea pots, tea cups and platters. Their collaboration led to terracotta reliefs and large painted plates among other objects. Pure Clay will show these collaborative works for the first time in New York alongside a selection of Young Sook Park and Lee Ufan’s work.

In the adjacent gallery, Contemporary Clay highlights recent ceramic sculpture by a range of artists – Kathy Butterly, Nicole Cherubini, Julia Chiang, Naoki Koide, Jeff Koons, Klara Kristalova, Erin McCutcheon, John O’Reilly, Joyce Robins, Arlene Shechet, Shinique Smith, Paul Swenbeck, Ai Weiwei – many with immediately recognizable names.

Both shows run to August 20, 2011.

fred 01 curatedmag FredTheFrench MP33 Sculpture

37 year old French artist, FredtheFrench lives and works in Lille. His latest sculpture, MP33, consists of 5 towers. Each tower is composed of respectively 32, 64, 128, 256 and 512 original LPs. These quantities correspond to the usual values of computer memory capacity (in gigabytes, 32GB, 64GB, etc.). The work gives physical existence to intangible assets, through a concrete form: vinyl records’s tower. It’s about compression format and about quality of sound.

Fred is represented by For Art Gallery.

David Zink Yi “Pneuma”

zink 01 curatedmag David Zink Yi Pneuma

One week from today, on Wednesday, 29 June, Hauser & Wirth New York will unveil the much-anticipated first U.S. solo exhibition of Berlin-based Peruvian artist David Zink Yi.  The show includes photography and video, and a massive sculptural installation capturing the strange magic and otherworldly poignance of Architeuthis, the storied giant sea squid.

The exhibition at Hauser & Wirth takes its name from the 16-millimeter short film ‘Pneuma,’ which features Cuban trumpeter Yuliesky Gonzalez Guerra, a member of De Adentro y Afuera, Zink Yi’s Cuban band. In a single take, Guerra is seen walking from the blurry background directly toward the camera until his face fills the frame in perfect focus. Taking three deep breaths, he places the trumpet in front of his face, disappearing behind its bell. The trumpet’s golden funnel replaces the musician’s features for about 40 seconds while he holds a single high C. The film lasts as long as Guerra can hold the note and ends abruptly at the moment he stops from exhaustion, lowers his instrument, and gasps for air.

The show will run through July 30, 2011.

Dutch illustrator and sculptor Parra has launched a new site, byParra.com. A comprehensive location for much of his work, the site shares some never-before-seen items and a full scope of the artist’s output. Functioning as a celebration of the post-pop master, there’s all the curvy women and witty jokes you’d expect.

In addition to a good range (thought a bit limited now) of images, the site provides a full list of Parra’s exhibitions and a full career break down.

A selection of Parra prints after the jump.

“The Ones You Didn’t Write – The Maybach Car”

In a city without cars, Julian Schnabel’s Venice Biennale work, The Ones You Didn’t Write – The Maybach Car”, certainly stands out. The work, essentially a vandalized test car, drawings by Vahakn Arslanian inside the windows and Schnabel’s scrawl on the body. It has also been shot at. A take on luxury, and a whole lot more. (via Arkitip).
