Carol Peligian “Sosomuch”

deanp 01 curatedmag Carol Peligian Sosomuch

Carol Peligian’s Sosomuch exhibition of recent paintings and sculptures opens on January 6, 2011 at Dean Project Gallery.

The exhibition continues Peligian’s alchemical seduction of material possibility: aluminum, oil, enamel, latex are equally employed to generate an altered state existing somewhere between atmosphere and stratosphere.

These works alternately confront and quietly elicit questions related to the idea of infinity and existence. The work’s delicate construction and implacable physicality provide the viewers with a space where the surrounding and the self become one in spirit.  The understanding of material/form is evident in each of the works.  Moreover, the integrity with which Peligian has approached her subjects, results in a paradoxical visual experience of reality/reassurance and the mystery of the purity of time/space. The juxtaposition of the organic and manufactured as they trade boundaries, make more permeable the borders between the work and the viewer.

The work will remain on view through February 12, 2011.

espace vuitton Espace Vuitton Tokyo

Closed for a few months undergoing renovations, Louis Vuitton’s Tokyo flagship will reopen on January 15, 2011 with an exhibition of artist Xaivier Veilhan. The exhibition will take place on the 7th floor of the store, in a new venue dubbed Espace Vuitton. Veilhan takes inspiration from the lofty location, preparing works that deal with the theme of elevation. (via Supernews).

Above is the Espace Vuitton, shall we say in the nude, and after the jump you’ll find a sculpture by Veilhan.

Located in Nanten, France, “La Machine” specializes in building massive machine characters. Directed by Francois Delaroziere, whose background lies in set design and theater, the firm is responsible for a dizzying array of creations and methods of non-verbal communication through machines. Os Gemeos visited “La Machine” (apparently with JR and his wife Prune). Their photos tell a vivid story of the studio that produces these stunning objects.

Another feather in the cap of the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum’s KAWS exhibition has arrived in form of a Giant Companion. Placed in the institutions grounds (will it be permanent? The Aldrich is a non-collecting institution), the piece comes from KAW’s Hong Kong show, Passing Through. Arrested Motion suggests it will be officially unveiled during a book signing January 30, 2011 at the museum.

Robert The: Bookguns

book gun 01 curatedmag Robert The: Bookguns

I haven’t got much to say about Robert The’s work, except that I think it is really cool. I have also already posted one book carving artist this week, so figured why not another? Robert’s work is smart, playful, and exhibits a rare wit with word play.

“Obsession with the semiotic erosion of meaning and reality led me to create objects that evangelize their own relevance by a direct fusion of word and form. Books (many culled from dumpsters and thrift store bins) are lovingly vandalized back to life so they can assert themselves against the culture which turned them into debris.” – Robert The 1995

A few more Bookgun examples after the jump.

With disused phone books as his canvas, Alex Queral carves portraits of famous folks. The results bare strong resemblance, if they are not the most attractive, but succeed primarily in proving great dedication at the hands of the artist. (via Lost in E. Minor).

Todd James x Studio Tokyo "Dumparoo" Sculpture

From my brothers at Highsnobiety, “Next week the new Todd James aka REAS exhibition will open in Brussels at the A.L.I.C.E. gallery. For the occasion the artist worked with Studio Tokyo and presents his very first ceramic sculpture. Limited to only 13 pieces, the sculpture was inspired by one of the artist’s paintings, created in 2008.”
