Cameras and Community: Photographs from the collection of the Institute of Arts and Media is on view at the California African American Museum through June 5, 2011.
The exhibit features the work of 20 California photographers, some legendary artists while others are still building their portfolios. Their subjects range from such personalities as the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and Cesar Chavez to the grounds crew at the Enterprise School District, and includes communities from the San Fernando Valley to the mountains of Colombia and the jungle of Chiapas, Mexico. They capture the tensions of a riot, the terror of war and the exhilaration of making music.
The range of subject is terrific. Take, for example the above, a snap shot of Martin Luther King, Ralph Abernathy and Sammy Davis Jr. taken by Jack Davis in 1963.

Susanna Hesselberg’s photographs make you think. The pictures might also make you laugh. One thing is certain, the artist takes great joy in twisting reality and her compositions make terrific use of shape.

Closing on April 3, 2011, Art of Attraction documents the unforgiving notion of beauty in the Western eye. The collected images range from the stereotypically titillating to those that genuinely question ideal beauty… sometimes, too, we find that it really is in the eye of the beholder.

The WestLicht Museum of Photography has purchased the International Polaroid Collection (essentially “saving” it). Over 4,400 artworks are included, representing some 800 artists (including heavyweights like Ansel Adams and Andy Warhol). In collaboration with Impossible, some of these works will find space in an exhibition opening at the museum on June 17, 2011, a show that finds the old instant film mingling with photographs taken with the new Impossible instant film.

Based in Boston, MA, Justin Keena has photographed a host of familiar faces – and products – in a short career. He’s got a newly launched site, which covers portraits, action, commissioned, and travel photography. Keena’s clients include Burton RED helmets, Converse, Columbia Sportswear, ICA Boston, CNCPTS, GNU Snowboards, Hydrathon, Icarus Frames, SecondWorld Design, and Automatic Media. His portraits are particularly good, and as such are the focus here today.

Warriors of Radness introduces a series of three t-shirts featuring photographs by the legendary Leigh Wiener.
Leigh Wiener was an award-winning American photographer and photojournalist. In a career that spanned five decades, he covered hundreds of people and events. His images captured the public and private moments of entertainers, musicians, artists, authors, poets, scientists, sports figures, politicians, industrialists, and heads of state, including every U.S. president from Harry Truman to Ronald Reagan. On a faithful summer day in 1960, on assignment at Malibu, he turned his lens on the hoards of surfers at Surfrider Beach capturing a pristine moment in the history of Los Angeles surf culture.
The photographs printed on the shirts were taken for the Surfrider Foundation in 1960.

I love this duo – Aurelien Arbet and Jeremie Egry. Their projects are a healthy balance of humor and an unbelievable eye for juxtaposition and texture. Travaux Choisis is the latest series.
