Recap | Chloe Early at Joshua Liner Gallery

2011 shotbyjake.com 20141 540x360 Recap | Chloe Early at Joshua Liner Gallery

Last Thursday, Chloe Early opened her exhibit “Feathers and Wax” at the Joshua Liner Gallery.

Working in oils on linen and aluminum panel, Chloe Early has developed a unique style that is simultaneously lush and raw. The romantic and the gritty meet in her paintings, which tease out a distinctively poetic worldview through the juxtaposition of extremes. At their core is a sensitivity to lyrical feelings and themes—love, beauty, innocence, softness—which collide with more worldly symbols of aggression and degradation, such as bullets, bombs, urban refuse, and ruins.

The Brooklyn based troupe, Faile, is the latest of a long line of greats to put up work in that spot. Other recent pieces have included Kenny Scharff, Shepard Fairey and Os Gemeos. 2011 shotbyjake.com 3944 540x360 Recap | Olek at Jonathan Levine Gallery, NYC

On the heels of her private installation at Primary Wave, Olek opened a solo show at the Jonathan Levine Gallery last Thursday entitled “The Bad Artists Imitate, The Great Artists Steal.” The exhibition includes Olek’s interpretation of various famous pieces ranging from the work of Picasso to that of Banksy. Olek also mixed up the color scheme a bit this time around. Instead of exclusively using the brilliant pinks and purples, she created several pieces in a monochromatic camo.  More looks after the jump.

kings ave 01 curatedmag New Kings Avenue Tattoo Shop on Bowery

Considering that the Bowery is essentially the cradle of NYC tattooing – consider that legends Samuel O’Reilly and Charlie Wagner occupied 11 Chatham Square for near on 70 years – it is a great delight to see top quality tattooing resume in the area. Kings Avenue has opened a new location in the thick of gentrification. A slice of old New York in the midst of new.

David Byrne Bike Racks

selectism - David Byrne Bike Racks

Some of you may have heard of David Byrne in association with Talking Heads, others because of his recent conversion of the Battery Maritime Building, a century-old ferry terminal in Manhattan, into a giant instrument.

Now Wallpaper reports about him getting together with the NYC Department of Transportation. The artist got together with the Department to create overall nine bike racks that are installed in Brooklyn and Manhattan.

"Byrne submitted ideas to the DOT of graphic shapes, inspired by specific locations throughout the city: the Ladies Mile (a high heel), the Villager (a dog), the Wall Street (a dollar sign) and so on.

The functioning racks came about when Byrne was chosen to be on the panel for an open competition held by the DOT for people to design novelty bike racks. Byrne himself sent in his series of drawings as examples and the DOT replied saying they’d happily install them. The designs were realised in the same square-shaped piping that the regular NYC bike racks are made from so people would identify them as bike racks rather than public art.

The racks have become minor landmarks in themselves. Up for just a year, they’re then going to be sold through Pace/MacGill Gallery, who represent Byrne’s artistic endeavours."

On your next NYC trip you might want to consider taking a David Byrne bike rack tour!
