On April 27, 2010, the Metropolitan Museum of Art will open Doug = Mike Starn on the Roof: Big Bambu. The twin’s have created a momumental bamboo structure for the museum’s Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Roof Garden – measuring at 100 feet in length and some 50 feet wide. Incorporating internal pathways and bridges, Big Bambu will grow as Summer progresses into fall. The piece incorporates elements of architecture, performance, and sculpture, suggesting the ever changing complexity of a living organism. Ultimately, the structure will take the form of a cresting wave.

Big Bambu will be open to the public, weather permitting, until October 31, 2010.

Downtown 81

Admittedly, this is a bit of a slow week for news. Downtown 81 is a fascinating film staring Jean-Michael Basquiat and detailing New York’s downtown art scene. Great music. Great cameos. Well worth it as a way of getting a sense of the look and feel of the period… having said that, other platforms are better for full intellectual investigation of the time.

If you are in the big apple this weekend don’t miss the Outsider Art Fair. This year the annual fair has moved from its original location, the Puck Building, to a more “adult” environment. Still, the art remains true to the mission of the gathering.

Head to 7 West 34th, New York, NY to visit the show, or to the New York Times for a review and related slide show.

David Tremlett “In Space” at Gering and LoPEZ Gallery

04 September 2008, 17.20 | Posted in Art | No comments »

selectism - David Tremlett

In Space, is a solo exhibition of new site-specific works by British artist David Tremlett. Working in pastel, Tremlett has created large-scale wall drawingsspecifically for the Gering & LoPEZ gallery space.

“Tremlett began making wall drawings in 1969, rising to prominence in the 1970s with other conceptual British artists such as Richard Long and Gilbert & George, as well as their American counterparts Sol LeWitt and Joseph Kosuth. Tremlett’s works are born from a generation fascinated with travel and adventure. Tremlett has journeyed around the world, through Asia, Africa, Central America, North America, and Europe, encountering the diverse people and creations of international cultures. The site-specific works currently on display in New York capture this sense of travel, as viewers physically engage with the drawings only briefly before continuing along their own paths. Tremlett brings his audience closer to authentic human experience through the impermanence of the wall drawings as viewers encounter works indigenous to a specific space. The singular rarity of this viewing can never be remade in quite the same way, leaving visitors with the persistent memory of a momentary artistic encounter.”

The exhibition runs from September 11 to October 25, 2008 at Gering & Lopez Gallery. Located at 730 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY, the gallery is open Tuesday through Friday.

selectism - action/abstraction at the jewish museum, new york

The first US exhibition in 20 years to rethink abstract expressionism and its surrounding movements, Action/Abstraction: Pollock, de Kooning, and American Art, 1940-1976 is up at the Jewish Museum in New York until September 21. The works of 32 artists are presented and viewed from the perspective of rival art critics, the artists and popular culture. This attempt to fuse a variety of thought points is an excellent review of the material and a nuanced approach to understanding the full impact of artmovements.

New York City Waterfalls

highsnobiety - new york waterfalls

A wonderful new public art initiative has four man made waterfalls placed around New York Harbor. Arranged by the Public Art Fund, some of the waterfalls reach the height of the Statue of Liberty. New York has seen grand public art before, in the caseof Christo’s gates, and some crap, in the case of the Cow Parade. Here’s hoping this goes down like the former.

The artist behind the project is Olafur Eliasson. This is his first public art project in NYC. The four waterfalls will run from 7am to 10pm, now until Oct. 13.

More images from the project after the jump. For a full experience check the New York Times for a slide show, or make your way to the big apple.
