Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing: How the Apollo Theater Shaped American Entertainment

apollo 01 curatedmag Aint Nothing Like the Real Thing: How the Apollo Theater Shaped American Entertainment

On view at the Museum of the City of New York through May 5, 2011, Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing.

Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing: How the Apollo Theater Shaped American Entertainment traces the evolution of the Apollo—from its origins as a segregated burlesque hall to its starring role at the epicenter of African American entertainment and American popular culture.  Nearly all forms of entertainment—comedy, dance, swing, jazz, rock ‘n’ roll, soul, hip hop, and more—were welcomed on the Apollo stage.  Serving as a place where African American performers could start and advance their careers, the Apollo helped to launch the careers of some of the best-known names in entertainment—dancers Charles “Cholly” Atkins, Sammy Davis, Jr., and Bill “Bojangles” Robinson; band leaders Cab Calloway and Duke Ellington; comedians Redd Foxx and Jackie “Moms” Mabley; and musicians ranging from Louis Armstrong, James Brown, and Lionel Hampton to Billie Holiday, Aretha Franklin, and the Jackson Five.

“At 870 feet tall, New York by Gehry is the tallest residential tower in the Western Hemisphere and a singular addition to the iconic Manhattan skyline. For his first residential commission in New York City, master architect Frank Gehry has reinterpreted the design language of the classic Manhattan high-rise with undulating waves of stainless steel that reflect the changing light, transforming the appearance of the building throughout the day.” – New York by Gehry.

“Abstract Expressionist New York” at MOMA

abstract newyork moma 01 curatedmag Abstract Expressionist New York at MOMA

Opened over the weekend, Abstract Expressionist New York pulls from MOMA’s vast collections of abstract expressionism – painting, sculpture, video, and more – to explore the achievements of a generation of artists that catapulted New York to center of the art universe in the 1950s.

More than sixty years have passed since the critic Robert Coates, writing in the New Yorker in 1946, first used the term “Abstract Expressionism” to describe the richly colored canvases of Hans Hofmann. Over the years the name has come to designate the paintings and sculptures of artists as different as Jackson Pollock and Barnett Newman, Willem de Kooning and Mark Rothko, Lee Krasner and David Smith. Beginning in the 1940s, under the aegis of Director Alfred H. Barr, Jr., works by these artists began to enter the Museum’s collection. Thanks to the sustained support of the curators, the trustees, and the artists themselves, these ambitious acquisitions continued throughout the second half of the last century and produced a collection of Abstract Expressionist art of unrivaled breadth and depth.

Conde Nast Traveller has produced a solid review of the exhibition, notable for the brief breakdown of the central ideas behind abstract expressionism. It can be found here.

The exhibition remains on view until April 25, 2011.

Another installation view after the jump.

Beekman Tower by Frank Gehry

beekman tower 01 curatedmag Beekman Tower by Frank Gehry

Inqmnd shares a few new looks at Frank Gehry’s Beekman Tower, currently under construction in New York City. With undulating facade, Gehry hopes to channel the spirit of 17th century sculptor Gian Bernini. The movement is softer in approach than some of the Canadian architects other work and I’d echo the thoughts of Inqmnd in suggesting the structure is a welcome addition to the New York skyline.

Anthony Lister art installation @ The Standard shop, New York

Anthony Lister Standard 01 curatedmag Anthony Lister art installation @ The Standard shop, New York

The second artist installation and editions for sale at The Standard, New York come from Australian artist Anthony Lister.

Following Julia Chiang’s ‘All for You’ installation in February, Lister has made mini-masks, shields and swords which will be on sale at The Standard shop- each as individual pieces of art (acrylic on wood, $200 signed and numbered by artist). The Standard says, “Anthony Lister uses comic book imagery for his own means, redirecting popular culture for personal expression. Heroes and villains are taken out of the panel and placed in a new space, devoid of the usual storyline, dialogue and scenery. His paintings are not controlled by cartoon context; rather, the figures in these portraits are reinvented through the artist’s hand. His mixed media technique, involving layers of ink, spray and brushwork, allows his paintings to simultaneously have a soft, ethereal and garish, raw energy.”

Lister will also be painting a site-specific piece on the glass window of the shop tomorrow, Wednesday September 15, 2010.

More looks at the installation follow.

Barry McGee Houston Street Mural

Jeff Newman, of The Art Collectors, reports live from the corner of Houston and Bowery, NYC, where Barry McGee has just completed his commission on the Tony Goldman sanctioned art wall. McGee (aka Twist) worked with long-time collaborator Amaze, and the duo follow in the footsteps of Os Gemeos and Shepard Fairey as the third official exhibitors on the space.

You may recall the wall opened with a reproduction Keith Haring mural and that there were reports of vandal graffiti tagging to the work. Is McGee responding to this in his tag heavy mural?

More images from Mr. Newman after the jump.
