skinner 01 curatedmag Preview | “The Fragile Art of Existence,” New Works by Skinner

San Francisco’s Shooting Gallery SF hosts new works from Skinner beginning on August 6, 2011. The self-taught artist will exhibit figurative mixed-media pieces that focus on his own personal vision and scope of understanding. Previously, his material has been quite dark, settling on investigations of fear and destruction.

The Fragile Art of Existence will run through August 27, 2011.

Olson, Olson, Recine and Associates at NYEHAUS

Alexander Richter 1773 Olson, Olson, Recine and Associates at NYEHAUS

Last week at NYEHAUS, an ambitious concept show launched featuring work by Alex Olson, Steve Olson, Yaniv Evan, Bob Recine, Curtis Kulig, and Phil Frost. Their collective brand of lawless art is fueled by counter and subcultural connections (skate, surf, etc.) branded against the swell of the corporate tide. Father and son, Alex and Steve Olson both blend skate and punk with their choice of media – Alex working in photo collage and his father presenting his trademark text work. The duo are complimented by Bob Recine’s fascinating mixture of popular culture media and real human hair. His are assemblages that prompt questions about fashion and self. Yaniv Evan provides vintage styled hand-painted signs and a magnificent motorcycle. Curtis Kulig, famed for his LOVE ME sculpture, adds his peculiar twist, and finally Phil Frost’s fantastic patterned work rounds out the firm.

Originally envisioned as a solo showing for Steve Olson, the artist has instead smartly curated a group show that offers distinct takes on art with the same aim. Not to be missed.

Olson, Olson, Recine and Associates runs through July 29, 2011.

meyers pelavin 01 curatedmag Recap | Timothy Paul Meyers: The Ontario Ration

As noted last week, New York’s Pelavin Gallery hosts Timothy Paul Meyers fascinating reconstruction of the life of unknown egg farmer Myron B. Johnson in The Ontario Ration. Through mixed media and sculptural installations, Meyers has created a fanciful history of the man – rooted in reality – that incorporates everything from ledgers to taxedermy animals.

On view through February 19, 2011.

Timothy Paul Meyers: The Ontario Ration

ontario ration 01 curatedmag Timothy Paul Meyers: The Ontario Ration

Timothy Paul Meyers: The Ontario Ration opens on January 6, 2011 at New York’s Pelavin Gallery.

Using a found business ledger, circa 1899-1929, of a relatively unknown egg farmer as the foundation of this exhibition, Myers attempts to portray the imaginary life-story of the ledgers’ creator, Myron B. Johnson. Myers uses the title page of Johnson’s ledger, which begins with the heading: The Ontario Ration, as inspiration for the title of his exhibition—the actual title page is also used as the center point of the exhibition in a piece also titled The Ontario Ration.  Surrounding this piece, Myers creates fantastical allusions to the farmer’s cultural and historical anthropology through mixed media collages and sculptural pieces.

It’s a bloody interesting premise and the exhibition is full of promise.

project space 01 curatedmag Project Space Presents “Melt Down”

Running from December 9, 2010 to January 9, 2011, Melt Down features large scale installation from Andrew Schoultz. Schoultz’s art is essentially about everyday life in America – he filters in bits and bobs from popular culture, including 1990s clipart, in his collage – pulled from a personal archive of ephemera. His narratives are sometimes political, but often simply fun. The exhibition will be hosted by Incase at Project Space.

Decadence Now! Visions of Excess

decadence 01 curatedmag Decadence Now! Visions of Excess

On view through January 2, 2011 Decadence Now! Visions of Excess brings work by Jan Van Oost, Alexander Kosolapov, Richard Stipl, and Geza Szollosi to Prague. The group show has a simple theme – big over the top art. Hosted by Galerie Rudolfinum, the exhibition has some great shock value too… for example Stipl turns Hitler into a bear skin rug.

Not for everyone. Certainly not of good taste. But, in the end an exhibition that when viewed with tongue-in-cheek has enough to amuse. (Have to love the flip of classic Taschen series titles).

More works from Decadence Now!, from Animal, after the jump.
