February 18, 2012, Atlanta’s High Museum will be opening an exhibit displaying the work of KAWS, entitled “Down Time.”
The High Museum of Art will premiere a major multi-site exhibition of work by Brooklyn-based artist Brian Donnelly, a.k.a. KAWS on February 18, 2012, with a 22-foot-high, site-specific mural painted in the Margaretta Taylor Lobby of the High’s Wieland Pavilion, along with a 24-foot-long triptych hung in the Museum’s Robinson Atrium. In addition, a gallery installation of paintings, drawings and sculpture will feature a grid of 27 tondo paintings, each 40 inches in diameter. Visitors will be able to watch KAWS over the course of a week in early February as he creates the mural exclusively for the High.
The exhibition will also include KAWS’s monumental sculpture Companion (2010), which will be installed on the Museum’s piazza on November 18, 2011, in advance of the main exhibition opening in February.
KAWS: Down Time has been organized exclusively for the High Museum of Art, Atlanta, by the High’s Wieland Family Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, Michael Rooks. The exhibition will be accompanied by a fully illustrated exhibition catalogue and will coincide with a public program featuring KAWS and Michael Rooks in conversation at the Alliance Theatre. The program starts at 7 p.m. on Thursday, February 16, as part of the High’s Conversations with Contemporary Artists lecture series.

Arrested Motion shares this exciting news – “KAWS fans in LA may remember his last showing in the City of Angels not only for the great art, but also for the long lines and large crowds they had to battle to get a look at their favorite artist. Well, let that be a lesson the second time around as he will be returning to Honor Fraser scheduled for a September 10th opening (perhaps with some Hennessy for attendees to sample). If these new images and his recent showing with the gallery at the Armory are any indications of what to expect, it looks as though the street turned fine artist will be experimenting with new color schemes for this new body of work.”

Last night, Hennessy held a launch party at New York’s New Museum for the limited edition bottles designed for the brand by KAWS. We caught Brian and event DJ Quest Love chatting, as well as some more looks at the special packaging.
Collectors take note, these bottles are individually numbered.

Paul Kasmin Gallery hosts this week’s “must attend” opening this week with the unveiling of Pretty on the Inside, a group exhibition curated by Erik Parker and KAWS.
Paul Kasmin Gallery presents the exhibition Pretty on the Inside, organized by Erik Parker and KAWS. This is the first time that the two artists have collaborated to organize an exhibition. Pretty on the Inside includes works in a range of media by seven American artists: Todd James, KAWS, Tony Matelli, Erik Parker, Joyce Pensato, Peter Saul, and Karl Wirsum. At first glance, these artworks challenge the viewer through their visual intensity, but upon closer inspection, they reveal an inner beauty. Many of the artists included make ironic or subversive works, hijacking the language of cartoons and comics to both celebrate and criticize contemporary culture.
The show runs from June 23, 2011 to August 19, 2011.

KAWS’ international touring sculpture, a massive Companion, reached it’s Summer home today – the Standard Hotel in New York City. “Passing Through” until October, 2011, the piece has previously enjoyed stints at the Aldrich Museum and in Hong Kong.
We were on hand to watch Mr. Donnelley install. Above is the Companion head still on the flat bed, just an indication of the sculpture’s scale.
