Shigeichiro Takeuchi makes good use of angles in designs for a dust bin and shoe horn. Shown above, the shoe horn stands on a hard maple base, this forms a unified sculptural element when fused with the plastic shoe horn itself. The dustbin reverses the material rolls, with maple top sliding over the cylindrical plastic bin. In both pieces, components are kept to absolute minimum (there are, in fact, no extras). The shapes and angles doing all the work. (via dezeen).

Stanley Ruiz | Design

curated mag - Stanley Ruiz | Design

Stanley Ruiz works in Brooklyn, New York. Since 2001 he has specialized in home furnishings and products, producing designs for large retailers throughout the world. His work balances a contemporary aesthetic afforded by new technologies and a raw feel derived from a deep interest and devotion to traditional handcrafts.

Ruiz’s “Raw” collection highlights the natural beauty of wood. The two products, clock and mirror, are both produced through CNC-milling and finished with hand cut leather. Here, Ruiz combines three important elements of his design – craft, nature, and technology. The clock, viewed above, is easily one of my favorite designs of 2009. Its simple, honest, functional, and devoid of superfluous embellishment.

Grass Mirror by H20 Architects

curated mag - Grass Mirror by H20 Architects

The latest project from H2O Architects takes inspiration from ancient philosophy. Where philosophers once looked at nature as a mirror, a method of contemplation, the firm turns the idea of the mirror into something that expresses nature directly and through a twist on the rectangle. The “Grass Mirror” reflects infinitely the objects surface, paying homage to thought in object form.

As object, the mirror can be displayed in a concise rectangle, or move to provide wider gaps and promote different types of reflection of the grass and mirror.

curated mag - Eco Home at the Geffrye Museum

Running through February 7, 2010, Eco Home at London’s Geffrye Museum examines new and current ideas about “eco living” and links thought about ecology to how we decorate and inhabit our homes. Eco Home serves as introduction to a range of new green products. The intent is to educate and encourage discussion about how the home works as central point in an ecologically sound lifestyle.

The Geffrye Museum depicts quintessential English middle-class living via the the living room. Period rooms from the 1600s to the present day act as portals into the lives and values of their inhabitants. Eco Home is a special exhibition presented with aid from John Lewis.

curated mag - Source Flagship by HUGE Architects

Shanghai-based HUGE Architects devised a flexible space for Beijing streetwear store Source. Their requirements were to keep the space free flowing, with allowance for swift and easy change. The one concession, it seems, is the centerpiece – a 9-meter shoe tower based on the concept of stacking shoe boxes. The remainder of the interior is inspired by fashion warehouse racking systems. curated mag - Philippe Starck for Warendorf

Warendorf is the new brand name for German kitchen giant Miele. To help raise awareness and promote the new identity, Warendorf enlisted Philippe Starck to design four new kitchen models. These are named “The Library,” “The Primary,” “The Duality,” and “The Tower.” All are complemented by functional tables built with trumpet shaped feet of chrome. (via The Contemporist).

“The Library” kitchen is my firm favorite. Head to the jump to view the other three.

curated mag - Creative Review November Issue

Creative spaces being particularly fascinating, the November Issue of Creative Review might just be the most intriguing since I became aware of the publication. Focusing on workplace, the issue gives the theme a nice twist – focusing on the places CR readers work in and what they do in those places. Included are ad and creative agencies, as well as a exclusive extract of the book Studio Culture.

curated mag - Leo Burnett Office by Ministry of Design

Singapore-based advertising firm Leo Burnett have a new office space created by local firm Ministry of Design. The keynote of the space is a large drawing of the agencies founder, Leo Burnett, along side a scaled pencil bearing the company name. This element draws visitors into the “space to impress” a welcoming area highlighting the firms past successes. From there, the space is broken up into two more distinct areas – a place for relaxation and a place for work. Ministry of Design took inspiration for Burnett’s stature as a “quintessential ad man” mixing up playful graphic with utilitarian ply wood desks. (Further information at Dezeen).

curated mag - Superb Cycle Shop by Oziio Design

With the current trend for urban cycling reaching dizzying heights there is no surprise that shops designed to cater to the subsequent needs are popping up with greater frequency. These spots are often characterized by a greater interest in design than the average bike store. Superb, opening to the public this Friday, is no exception. The interior of the store was executed by Oziio Design, and is influenced by the original Victorian era aesthetic and the sweeping curves of the Velodrome.

Superb Bicycle is located at 842 Beacon Street in Boston. Head to the jump for many more images of the interior.
