tron ice 01 curatedmag Tron Inspired Room at Ice Hotel

Disney’s  Tron: Legacy continues to inspire artists of all kinds. UK design duo Ben Rousseau and Ian Douglas–Jones, of Extreme Design, got to work in the Ice Hotel and created the “Legacy of the River’ art suite. Located in Jukkasjaviri, Sweden the hotel is made entirely of ice and snow. Rousseau and Douglas-Jones embedded new lighting technology into the ice, creating the “Tron” feel. This lighting system is also used by the designers in their latest furniture project. Consider the “Legacy of the River” a kick-off to the new work, and also keep it in mind for winter adventure. British Design Consultants SHH are responsible for two new restaurants at the Barbican. Formally known as the Barbican Foodhall, these spaces compliment the locations iconic brutalist architecture (I’m particularly fond of how they’ve worked the ceilings), all at the hands of an all-star design team. Furniture is provided by Stefan Bench, lighting by .PSLAB, and even the flowers are arranged by an award winner. (via Contemporist).

Architectural firms Studio Rolf and Zecc Architects are responsible for the radical renovation of a century old row home in Rotterdam. With split level interiors, they manager to expand a narrow space and encourage a new flow of space. Part of the success comes in what they’ve avoided – doors, railings, and other trappings of the traditional home interior. Through subtracting, rather than adding, the positives of the Black Pearl House and Workshop are accentuated and the home becomes an exercise in individuality. (via We Heart).

llove 01 curatedmag LLove Exhibition, Tokyo

LLove celebrates 400 years of trade and cultural relations between Japan and the Netherlands. The exhibition follows an interesting premise – 8 designers (Japanese and Dutch, including Scholten & Baijings, Pieke Bergmans, Richard Hutten and Jo Nagasaka) created full room installations in what essentially serves as a pop up hotel. Their rooms are both exhibition spaces and available for impromptu stays.

The exhibition is curated by Suzanne Oxenaar, artistic director of the Lloyd Hotel in Amsterdam.

Wallpaper* has the full story, and notes the “hotel” will be open until November 23, 2010.

Written by Jane Thompson and Alexandra Lange, Design Research documents the history of a ground breaking interior design shop. “When Ben Thompson opened Design Research in Boston in 1953, his innovative store became synonymous with modern interior design, lighting a public spark that still burns today, though the store itself is no longer. When the mass-produced furniture of impersonal department stores reigned supreme, this boutique retailer dared to provide a learned yet unpretentious environment for sleek design. Today, Design Research’s legacy can be seen in the showrooms of Crate & Barrel and Design Within Reach. Through interviews, anecdotes and lush photographs, Design Research documents the array of household objects and furniture introduced to the American home through the legendary store that made good design available to all.”
