Friends of Leon Gallery shares word on their upcoming exhibition, “Alexandra Lekias is one of the most exciting artists we have seen. A hidden artistic jewel from Perth who is going to make her mark on the contemporary illustration world. Her November 18th show Lifelong Baby Teeth is set to be one of our biggest and most visual arresting exhibitions to date. ”

Lekias, an illustrator of great precision, melds water color with fine line ink drawing to produce richly symbolic narratives. Much of her work focuses on female figures, her interest in adolescence apparent and her consistency of color tying the greater body of work together.

“Powers of Ten takes us on an adventure in magnitudes. Starting at a picnic by the lakeside in Chicago, this famous film transports us to the outer edges of the universe. Every ten seconds we view the starting point from ten times farther out until our own galaxy is visible only a s a speck of light among many others. Returning to Earth with breathtaking speed, we move inward- into the hand of the sleeping picnicker- with ten times more magnification every ten seconds. Our journey ends inside a proton of a carbon atom within a DNA molecule in a white blood cell. POWERS OF TEN © 1977 EAMES OFFICE LLC (www.eamesoffice.com)”

In addition to the youtube release of the Powers of Ten, a new website celebrating the film and offering a few products launched on 10/10/10. (via Arktip).

Chelsea Clinton and Marc Mezvinsky by aleXsandro Palombo front Chelsea Clinton and Mark Mezvinsky in A Wonderful Honeymoon

Since aleXsandro Palombo, of Humor Chic, made me laugh with this fictional honeymoon story, I’m going to share it. Palombo covers ’society’ through humorous illustration. The key to this, his most recent set, should be obvious – if not, here’s the hint, the illustrations play on the USA’s most recent blockbuster union.

It’s Nice That has been rounding up the cream of the new MA graduate crop from the Royal College of Art. Among those featured, illustrator Jan Lun Lee speaks most directly to my tastes. Pieces like “The Squid Catcher” (above) have a folksy maritime appeal… and anyone that knows me well will understand the draw there.

Lee studied at the Glasgow School of Art and Massachussets College of Art before landing in London. Lee now lives and works in the Big Smoke.
