On view through January 2, 2011, “The Hammer Museum and the Aspen Art Museum have co-organized Mark Manders: Parallel Occurences/Documented Assignments, the first North American tour of this acclaimed Dutch sculptor’s work. Through his sculptural practice, the artist seeks to bypass language, translating his thoughts and obsessions directly into three-dimensional objects—existing and self-made—and tableaux that incorporate figures, animals, household furniture, archeological fragments, everyday objects, and architectural components. Transformed by their proximity to one another, these mundane sculptural elements collectively evoke a mysterious world of daydreams and fairy tales. In exhibition after exhibition, Manders furthers his monumental project, initiated in 1986, entitled Self-Portrait as a Building, which endeavors to map out his identity using this distinct personal iconography. For this exhibition, the artist will create a completely new body of work, encompassing sculpture and works on paper.”

A full look at the exhibition follows after the jump.

The Hammer Museum is currently hosting a major exhibition marking the joint acquisition of the complete archive of prints by Los Angeles publisher Edition Jacob Samuel by the UCLA Grunwald Center for the Graphic Arts, Hammer Museum, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, entitled Outside the Box: Edition Jacob Samuel, 1988-2010.

Since 1988 Jacob Samuel has published 43 portfolios of prints made by a diverse group of international artists, including Marina Abramovic, John Baldessari, Chris Burden, Mona Hatoum, Rebecca Horn, Anish Kapoor, Barry McGee, Ed Moses, Matthew Monahan, Wangechi Mutu, Gabriel Orozco, Nancy Rubins, Ed Ruscha, Robert Therrien, James Welling, Christopher Wool, and Andrea Zittel, among many others. Working primarily in series in intaglio mediums such as etching, drypoint, and aquatint, Samuel has invited artists to create prints in his Santa Monica studio but has also traveled internationally to collaborate with artists in their own studios. The number of prints included in each portfolio range from 6 to 36, with more than 550 individual prints included in the 43 portfolios.

The exhibition runs another week at the Hammer Museum. Certainly worth making time for if you happen to be in the LA area.

Here I’m showing work produced by Barry McGee at the Samuel studio and more appears after the jump.

Video | Rachel Whiteread: Water Tower Sketchbook

23 April 2010, 18.59 | Posted in Art | No comments »

Open for just two more days, the Hammer Museum at the University of California has been host to Rachel Whiteread Drawings since January 31, 2010. The first museum retrospective of the British artist’s drawings, the exhibition does relate the work on paper to her more famed sculptures, but emphasis in on process.

The above video should hammer down the point.

FLUX front FLUX Screening Series at the Hammer Museum

LA’s Hammer Museum hosts the Flux Screening Series, which kicks off for 2010 tonight. I’m always pleased with museum programing that takes a stab at pulling in new audiences and engaging the local community. With the Flux Screening Series, the Hammer regularly ties in great short film and music… and gives good reason to spend an evening out at the museum.

Tonight’s program features short films and music videos, along with a special performance by OK Go.

Check out the release after the jump for full information.
