“Dots” : The World’s First Graffiti Funded Film

dots box set 01 curatedmag Dots : The Worlds First Graffiti Funded Film

Fresh off the press -

On 8 September 2010, graffiti fans and art collectors will be able to purchase a limited edition box-set of prints from some of the leading names on the London graffiti scene. However, this box-set comes with a difference. The owner will also receive a percentage share in a new graffiti documentary film that is currently in production. This is the first time that a film has been funded through graffiti art sales.

Burning Candy (Cept, Cyclops, Dscreet, Gold Peg, James Jessop, LL Brainwash, Mighty Mo and Rowdy) are currently making a new film Dots, which follows each artist on a journey around the world, as they visit the places and cultures that most inspire their artistic style, in order to discover how they can take their own work further. Not content to go about making a documentary in the traditional way, Dots is directed by The Baron, a former elusive member of Burning Candy. Drawing on his own prodigious talents as a graffiti artist and filmmaker, the Baron is able to access this closely guarded underground scene with a level of insight that few, if any, other documentarians have been able to achieve before.

To fund the film, BC produced a limited edition box-set of nine prints, one from each artist. These highly desirable sets are bound to become collectors’ items immediately – Mighty Mo recently released a set of prints which sold out in less than two hours. The box-set includes a certificate of authenticity, which gives the owner a 0.05% share of the film’s profits for the next 10 years and a co-producer credit on the film. In this way, the profits from the prints will fund the film.

For more information about the film and to purchase a box-set, please go to www.dotsthefilm.com.

The prints will be available to buy from 10am on 8 September 2010.

Head to dotsthefilm to buy the prints and hit the jump to view the contents of the set.

Meggs “Sons of Privilege”

Meggs SOP 01 curatedmag Meggs Sons of Privilege

Lo-Fi Collective, a new bar and exhibition space in Sydney hosted its launch party on August 26th in conjunction with Meggs’ solo exhibition ‘Sons of Privilege!’ Lo-Fi is a new 3rd storey warehouse style exhibition space that will host an exhibition a week for the next months.

Based on the Alexisonfire lyric ‘we don’t want to be slaves to the sons of privilege’, Meggs’ latest exhibition questions personal freedoms and liberties, the right to challenge ideas, politics and blind patriotism. Freedom of thought, self-expression and independence should be admired and we shouldn’t bow to the pressure of social stigmas, expectations, comparison or greed. This exhibition follows Meggs’ sell-out show ‘King for a day’ in Melbourne and Hong Kong and is a continuation of the fragile nature of power, fame and fortune.

Barcelona’s Zosen will make his UK debut tomorrow at StolenSpace. The Buenos Aires-born artist’s System Collapse includes new paintings on canvas. Like many street artists, Zosen’s intent is to comment on the current social and political climate. What speaks most directly is his use of bold color and line, forming enticing patterns which, if want of anything else, are indeed eye catching.

StolenSpace is the host, so head over to Old Truman Brewery through August 29, 2010, to catch the show.

New York Magazine points to these terrific videos. “The stop-motion short offers a dollhouse-size representation of a typical hour on the Tumblingerstraße, a legally graffiti-friendly street in Munich.”

I really like them. Check the second after the jump.

Retna Installation at Rivera & Rivera

retna front Retna Installation at Rivera & Rivera

Rivera & Rivera Gallery, relatively new to the LA contemporary scene, opens an exciting installation of work by Retna this evening. The graffiti artist’s trademark typography fills the space, covering walls and carpets, creating an immersing experience of his multi-sourced style. Retna primarily draws from hieroglyphics and street tagging, his lettering designed to be read in both English and Spanish.

For the gallery, this showing is also a way to, in short, go out with a bang. The final exhibition at their current location, it will pave the way for a new space opening this Fall in Los Angeles’ downtown art district.

Street Art | Mural by Blu in Warsaw, Poland

blu mural warsaw front Street Art | Mural by Blu in Warsaw, Poland

While not exactly a lead up piece to his involvement in the tenth installment of Nuart (a now yearly street art festival in Stavenger, Norwary), Blu’s recent mural in Warsaw, Poland is indicative of the scope of recent work. The narrative is strong, as is the concept. It is the type of “go big” stuff I most appreciate in the genre.
