Chair by Alberto Rezende

carpet chair 01 curatedmag Chair by Alberto Rezende

This chair is remarkable. I love the sort of “magic carpet” vibe, the trickery of the eye, and even the potential for color. Designed by Alberto Rezende, who works in Brazil and splits his time between branding, digital art and design, the chair is built of EVA metallic screen. This provides the internal support structure allowing for the free flowing form. (via Industrial Design Served).

cala 01 curatedmag Cala Indoor Bench

The Cala Indoor Bench is still in prototype, but I can’t think the design will be too long waiting in the wings. I love the sharp twist between directions, and (of course) the little nod to ancient crule bases with the outer legs. Designed by Veronica Martinez. (via Industrial Design Served).

The youngest recipient of ARTs Award (2010), Jason Phillips, has released a new a few new offerings. Above, you’ll see the Spotlight chair which is made of a signal seat fused to an elliptical base. This gives the illusion, not so subtle, of being firmly in the limelight. What is subtle, however, are Philips other new designs including a fabulous dinning table. (via Frame).

“I Am Furniture” by Bas van Raay

i am furniture 01 curatedmag I Am Furniture by Bas van Raay

Heating, especially space heaters, is rarely a high priority for cutting edge design. Bas van Raay, a Dutch designer, sees things a bit differently. While his heaters are certainly inspired by furniture forms, I’m wary of labeling them strictly speaking as such. However, they are remarkable objects and make up the impressive “I Am Furniture” collection.

Yatzer remarks, “We assume that Raay’s inspiration for his ‘I AM FURNITURE’ series was drawn from his graduation project ‘heatingpoint,’ which was accomplished during his studies at The Design Academy of Eindhoven*NL.  ‘Heatingpoint’ is a “heated meeting-point” which can be applied in any lounge, lobby or meeting-point area.  We do find reference from ‘heatingpont’ in Bas van Raay’s I AM FURNITURE series, as a heater is transformed into a unique piece of furniture. In today’s design world where heaters have been transformed, some of them try to outpass themselves from a design point of view, while they try to maintain their functionality of keeping us warm.  The heater design challenge has been an ongoing process for many designers as they try to transform the heater and make it a design object which will integrate within any given space.  Let’s not forget that most people don’t like the chunky old heaters, although I have to admit that some of them have their own unique glamour of the past.”

Tron Chair

tron chair 01 curatedmag Tron Chair

Perhaps unexpected (though also, oddly expected given the breadth of Tron tie-ins), this chair was designed by Dror Benshetrit, an NYC-based fellow, and produced by Italian firm Cappellini. The chair is made of impregnated fiberglass and polyester resin. With its angular layers, the Special Production Walt Disney Signature TRON Armchairs invite you to “sit off the grid.” (via Core 77).

Not surprisingly, Benshetrit’s design is debuting today at Art Basel Miami. The chairs will come in a variety of paint jobs. Check them out after the jump.

New from Jardan, the Iko Table finds designer Nick Garnham playing with ideas of “tropical luxury.” For those of us in the Northern Hemisphere, the table set brings a little Australian Summer to our increasingly cold winter. The solid wood legs compliment patterned marble tops – which come in a variety of types and sizes. As always, Jardan is dedicated to sustainable material and ecological design.

“Dressed Up” by KamKam

kamkam 01 curatedmag1 Dressed Up by KamKam

We are already huge fans of KamKam. The Korean design firm’s latest offers are called “Dressed Up.” Similar in shape and function to their previous, An Furniture, this collection takes name from full felt upholstery. The fasteners are also textile inspired – a series of belts, buttons, and zips. The range includes a bench, cabinets, and stools.

Really fun… it even has secret storage behind the doors. (via Dezeen).

The COMBO Chair

COMBO chair 01 curatedmag The COMBO Chair

Velichko Velikov’s latest furniture prototype is a wooden stacking chair. “The COMBO chair is made from wood and plywood with a very basic structure as i am pointing at  sustainability of this product. The seat and the back rest can be done in steel also – powder coated or leather covered. The chair is stackable in terms of space saving. Meant to be transported as a flat pack item and to be assembled by the customer.” (via Industrial Design Served).

I love the bulk of the legs.
