composition chair big a 540x359 Aluminum Wire Composition Chair by Kouchi Okamoto

Intricate and astounding, this chair took six months to make. As stated by Kyouei Design:

This chair was handmade by Kouichi Okamoto himself, spent over 6 months for one chair. It was created by bending aluminium wire and crossing it one by one. No bolts or welding is used at all. The tools used for this design are only a jig and a pair of pliers.

That is some commitment. I wonder how comfortable it is. Detailed photos after the jump.

bachag8 540x374 Bachag Chair by Joong Ho Choi

The wood and aluminum Bachag chair, crafted and designed by Korean designer Joong Ho Choi, was a part of the iDEALGRAPHY project, which asked designers to create mix and match style within furnitures and fashion. It was aimed to show the contrasts between the two ways of designing, and how their marriage could bring about a balanced final product.

Choi says the Bachag chair “was designed to express structures and usability  to provide comfort and unity , and when you sit in it, it’s as if you’re wearing a designer handbag.”

arad 01 curatedmag Ron Arads Ripple Chair

While sales are not a regular feature on this site, it is worth noting that the Ripple Chair, designed by Ron Arad, is available now for a rather nice price at the SFMOMA Museum Shop. Arad’s injection-molded thermoplastic seat holds a relief design reminiscent of traces left by waves in the sand. As such, the chair successfully melds the designer’s notions of sculpture and practicality in a sturdy chair. A collection of four is also easily stacked, making it design that is also easy to store.

With Alma, Roberta Rampazzo – a Brazilian designer – successfully mixes materials and finds use for scrap wood. Housing wood chips in an acrylic case, she manages to promote the texture of even the most humble wood. It’s quite an achievement and the stern line of the table perfectly balances the roughness of the scrape material. (via Frame).
