On Friday, Tiffany Bozic opened her latest Confiding to Strangers at Joshua Liner.
Spanning the gallery’s two exhibition areas, Confiding to Strangers features thirteen medium-sized works in acrylic on maple-wood panel and eighteen watercolor-on- paper works. All showcase Bozic’s meticulous, realist rendering of plant and animal subjects that recasts nature as fable. “Each painting is about the intimate struggles we share with other living creatures,” says Bozic. “I use examples from nature to help me describe these increasingly complex emotions, expanding my own metaphorical language. These works are small reminders that we are nature; connected to everything.”
Open to December 11, 2010.

Down in Atlanta, Saltworks is gearing up for the opening of Brian Dettmer’s New Worlds to Conquer. The artist’s highly anticipated Atlanta solo exhibition will run from November 20, 2010, to January 15, 2011.
Sculpting traditional hard-cover books into artworks of intricate beauty, their richness and depth is uncovered and re-contextualized. Taking inspiration from the book “New Worlds to Conquer” by Richard Halliburton (1929) the exhibition harkens back to a time when exploration of new lands fueled the fire of imagination and intrigue.
Between WWI and WWII transcontinental flight first became possible but was still only accessible to an elite few with the drive and the means to explore the world. Far-away lands were at once within reach and a new quest for knowledge and adventure began. Adventurers returned from their explorations with exotic novelties and eye-opening stories of what they discovered on the other side of the globe. Museums exploded with the proliferation of newly discovered artifacts found around the world. The quest for knowledge boomed; ideas developed into books and encyclopedias expanded. The hunger for knowledge of the unknown fueled the quest and books became the perfect vehicle to spread the stories and discoveries made around the world.

Currently on view at William Baczek Fine Arts, as part of Non Objective, Jaq Chartier’s painting takes inspiration from science and its look from layers of paint and acrylic gel.
About the artist -
Jaq Chartier’s paintings explore scientific methods through experimentation with paint and process. All of her works are “tests” to discover something about materials and what they do. Inspired in part by images of DNA gel electrophoresis, Chartier investigates the migration of various stains through layers of paint and acrylic gels.
Jaq’s paintings feature intimate views of materials as they react to each other, to light, and to the passage of time, including notes written directly on the paintings. Through experimentation, observation and notation Chartier creates sensuous paintings that provide commentary on both the visual culture and everyday practice of scientific investigation by highlighting similarities between artistic and scientific practice.
Non Objective runs to November 27, 2010.

Roa has taken his act inside for a gallery showing at LA’s New Puppy. What I love is the texture and the use of multiple surfaces for single paintings. Both things give Roa’s work an extra dynamic that implies a reaction to space (key to good street art). In short, I’m impressed.
The exhibition, labeled as a special event, is presented by ThinkSpace and runs to November 23, 2010.

On view through January 2, 2011, “The Hammer Museum and the Aspen Art Museum have co-organized Mark Manders: Parallel Occurences/Documented Assignments, the first North American tour of this acclaimed Dutch sculptor’s work. Through his sculptural practice, the artist seeks to bypass language, translating his thoughts and obsessions directly into three-dimensional objects—existing and self-made—and tableaux that incorporate figures, animals, household furniture, archeological fragments, everyday objects, and architectural components. Transformed by their proximity to one another, these mundane sculptural elements collectively evoke a mysterious world of daydreams and fairy tales. In exhibition after exhibition, Manders furthers his monumental project, initiated in 1986, entitled Self-Portrait as a Building, which endeavors to map out his identity using this distinct personal iconography. For this exhibition, the artist will create a completely new body of work, encompassing sculpture and works on paper.”

Running in tandem with Melissa Forman’s portraiture, Bristol-based street artist Andy Council presents “Parallel Evolutions” at Corey Helford Gallery. Council’s work, vibrant and playful in color, follows a firm interest in urban myths and extinct beasts. His exaggerated forms question the relationship between natural and man made worlds. “Parallel Evolutions” consists of 10 new works in total.
On view through December 8, 2010.

Over the weekend, Corey Helford Gallery opened Ohio-based Melissa Forman’s first solo exhibition “The Keepers of Creation.” Specializing in female portraits, Forman offers 16 new works at the Culver City Gallery. She notes, ““Each painting in this series represents a different aspect of the natural world and the importance of respecting and protecting it. Nothing is taken for granted in the world of the Protectors and the goddesses, wildlife, and natural world have developed a truly symbiotic relationship.”
The work remains on view through December 8, 2010.
