nucleo 01 curatedmag Studio Nucleo Presenze Part II Chair

Designed by Studio Nucleo, the Presenze collection channels the glories of nineteenth-century Baroque through minimalistic resin shapes. The furniture, which includes consoles, desks, and bedside tables, is highlighted by terrific chairs. These have great presence, and through material manage to hold the physicality of the Baroque without maintaining the style’s weight.

Versioned Chairs by Sam Jacobs

versioned chairs 01 curatedmag Versioned Chairs by Sam Jacobs

These odd chairs, more objects, are the result of a collaboration between architect/designer Sam Jacobs and a number of artists. The idea is to provoke some “lost in translation” elements as the design process moves from one step to another. First, Jacobs (who is co-owner of London-based Fat) made notes pertaining to the look of the chair. These went to artists who produced the sketches. Finally, those sketches hit 3D rendering. In the end, we get a series of chairs that have been distorted pieces that serve as physical manifestations of Jacobs’ intellectual project. (via Frame).

More Versioned chairs come after the jump.

samdurant 1 Sam Durant Porcelain Chairs

Multi-media artist Sam Durant combines a few different elements into his “Porcelain Chairs” project. First, he tackles the ubiquity of the plastic outdoor chair. Second, he gives the near indestructible object an aura of vulnerabilty by reconstructing the chairs in porcelain. The material choice allows for a beautiful glazing and a tremendous pop of color. (via Today and Tomorrow).

More direct views of “Porcelain Chairs” follow.

gudmund front Chairs by Gudmund Bladh

Gudmund Bladh is an architectural student at Lund University in Sweden. His furniture design has a decidedly industrial edge – utilizing concrete, heavy metal piping, and thick wood plank. Comfort, some might believe, is a secondary concern to aesthetics, though by the look of the angles the seated position has more potential than the material choices suggest.

A full look at the chairs can be found on Contemporist.

curated mag - Antique Dealer Spotlight | Thomas Schwenke

Dealing since 1970, Thomas Schwenke specializes in furniture of the American Federal period. A key moment in the development of American arts, the Federal period (1785 to 1820) brought larger homes and more distinct refinement to the former Colonies. The furniture takes from English and French design, but adds twists of national motif and emblem.

Schwenke is recognized as on of the foremost experts in American Federal furniture, reflected in his inventory. Early and late neoclassical styles are well represented. Additionally, European (particularly English) pieces of the period intermingle with the furniture of American origin. For example, the set of carved mahogany Regency chairs above were produced in England ca. 1820.

Thomas Schwenke’s shop is located in Woodbury, CT.

A few selections from current inventory after the jump.
