Jardan designers Nick Garnham and Rod Carlson present their latest upholstered seating series – Ned. Described as “Dependable, dapper and always entertaining,” the collection is given personality through “flying ears” and sculpted seats. Dependability comes via hardwood frames, complete with eco-plywood and steel support. The Ned satisfies the demands of any household.

Indian design firm Studio Alternatives latest seating furniture is built from flat steel bars. The form, most simply put a cantilevered rocker, works flipped to either side. This means it functions as both a low slung seat and a high backed veranda chair.

It looks best with the addition of bamboo rods… which serve to accentuate the line and provide further support. (Via DB).

Wooden Seat 01 curatedmag A Stool Made from Leftover Wood

Designer Andrzej Mazur says of his wooden seat with iron curved legs, “I have found  proportional oak leftover pieces at the wood mill. I gave them only few smooth lines and added iron elements which was just formality. I have received a stable piece of furniture with an intriguing shape”. (via Cool Boom).

Good design news comes in twos today from my friends at Cool Hunting. In a single post, they reveal that Eero Aarnio has released an updated version of the classic 1968 Pastil Chair. The new piece, a molded fiberglass seat, takes the name “Soap Chair” for its resemblance to a soap dish. Like Aarnio, the chair is produced in Finland.

Cool Hunting’s second bombshell is that the chair will be released on the new members only (but easy to join) web portal DesignStory. Expect more good things from them.

Look at more images of the “Soap Chair” after the jump.

Furniture by Daisuke Motogi

motogi furniture 01 curatedmag Furniture by Daisuke Motogi

An architect by trade, young Japanese designer Daisuke Motogi takes a playful approach to furniture. His “Lost in sofa” has been making the digital rounds, a humorous response to those times when everything you need ends up hidden between sofa cushions. Motogi flips the scenario and makes the cushions integral storage zones – promoting “loosing” things in between the folds.

The “Sleepy chair” too has a sense of fun. At base, the piece is a futon. In Motogi’s hands the chair becomes a metonym for blanket, providing warmth and comfort. A third piece of furniture, “Retire” is most literal in intent – half a tire on the floor for use as seating furniture.

In sum, Motogi successfully finds function in disorder. The results both amuse and provide.

Stefan Gougherty takes recycling into his own hands with these wordy chairs. Using old newspapers, Gougherty molds stackable seats produced through gluing together quarter inch paper layers and finishing the chair with a resin dip. The result is a very light, surprisingly rigid piece of furniture.

Gougherty graduated from the Rholde Island School of Design in 2009. This chair was produced during his time in University.

More images of the chair follows.
