Got a sweet tooth and a furniture fetish? Spell Design Studio, of Arnhem, Netherlands, has just the thing to satisfy you. Inspired by dipped ice cream bars, the Sweet series of sofas and stools are “coated” and supported on Popsicle stick legs. The result is rather cutesy, but more on the side of fun than upsetting. Chair by Alberto Rezende

carpet chair 01 curatedmag Chair by Alberto Rezende

This chair is remarkable. I love the sort of “magic carpet” vibe, the trickery of the eye, and even the potential for color. Designed by Alberto Rezende, who works in Brazil and splits his time between branding, digital art and design, the chair is built of EVA metallic screen. This provides the internal support structure allowing for the free flowing form. (via Industrial Design Served).

eames 01 curatedmag Video | Bobby Fischer and the Time Life Lobby Chair

Daily Icon reports, “Chess grand master Bobby Fischer specifically requested the Time Life Lobby Chair designed by Charles and Ray Eames while he competed in the World Chess Championship in Reykjavik In 1972. He said he could concentrate well in the chair. When his opponent Boris Spaasky saw it, he refused to play until he got one too. Vitra has produced a short video on this historical event.”

Tron Chair

tron chair 01 curatedmag Tron Chair

Perhaps unexpected (though also, oddly expected given the breadth of Tron tie-ins), this chair was designed by Dror Benshetrit, an NYC-based fellow, and produced by Italian firm Cappellini. The chair is made of impregnated fiberglass and polyester resin. With its angular layers, the Special Production Walt Disney Signature TRON Armchairs invite you to “sit off the grid.” (via Core 77).

Not surprisingly, Benshetrit’s design is debuting today at Art Basel Miami. The chairs will come in a variety of paint jobs. Check them out after the jump.

The Oddbod Chair

oddbod 01 curatedmag The Oddbod Chair

Spanish designer Javier Alejandre is responsible for the Oddbod Chair. There’s a great sense of humor about the design – which takes from cartoons and sci-fi – the intent to balance the inherent inertia of furniture with a little life. Alejandre refers to the style as retro-future organic. Makes sense to me. (via Contemporist).

“Dressed Up” by KamKam

kamkam 01 curatedmag1 Dressed Up by KamKam

We are already huge fans of KamKam. The Korean design firm’s latest offers are called “Dressed Up.” Similar in shape and function to their previous, An Furniture, this collection takes name from full felt upholstery. The fasteners are also textile inspired – a series of belts, buttons, and zips. The range includes a bench, cabinets, and stools.

Really fun… it even has secret storage behind the doors. (via Dezeen).

COMBO chair 01 curatedmag The COMBO Chair

Velichko Velikov’s latest furniture prototype is a wooden stacking chair. “The COMBO chair is made from wood and plywood with a very basic structure as i am pointing at  sustainability of this product. The seat and the back rest can be done in steel also – powder coated or leather covered. The chair is stackable in terms of space saving. Meant to be transported as a flat pack item and to be assembled by the customer.” (via Industrial Design Served).

I love the bulk of the legs.

Rough & Ready by Vanja Bazdulj

RoughReady 01 curatedmag Rough & Ready by Vanja Bazdulj

After finishing the Faculty of Architecture in Ljubljana, Slovenia in 2008 and working for a few years as an architect, Vanja Bazdulj decided to explore and experiment with smaller scale objects that attracted her since forever. This lead to her moving to London to do a MA Furniture design in 2010 and pursuing the object-design calling.  The philosophy behind the work has always been about exploring materials out of context and presenting alternative solutions to object form and structure.  At this year’s Design Festivals in London: Tent, Vanja showcased her work for the first time and got some great responses. One of these examples is the Rough&Ready furniture morphology presented here. Current collection is composed from Mr. Easy (chair) and The Sidekick (stool). Be on the lookout for new morphologies coming soon on www.vanjabazdulj.com.

Kawamura-Ganjavian’s Oyster chair is a real space saver. “Oyster is a versatile piece of furniture: when folded it is a cushion, and when unfolded it creates an individual private ‘shelter’. It’s also easy to transport and store away, making it suitable for those with limited living space.” (via Frame).
