Based in Los Angeles, by way of Berlin, Kalon Studios is the realized dream of husband and wife team Johannes Pauwen and Michele Simmering. Their aim to create innovative product and design with an eye toward positive change finds shape in the signature series. Three pieces make the collection – a chair, table, and box. Graphic designer Sander van Heukelom has developed a new chair out of a his youthful fascination with and practice in graffiti. The fat cap chair is built in the vision of, yes, a spray can cap. Two styles are presented – one sits directly on the ground, while the other is perched on a base. Both are constructed from styrofoam with a protective coating. Omri Barzeev’s Zaza Chair uses a flexible felt covering to allow a adjustable seat above a simple wooden base. The upper is constructed using laser cutting technology and layered felt, which when folded gives the seat its structure. Barzeev is a recent graduate of Shenkar College of Engineering and Design. Packaged in a standard size poster tube, the Tube Chair by Plant&Moss was exhibited at this months New Designers in London. The basic premise of the design is simple – pack a new chair in such a way that it is easy to transport and deliver. In side the tube, is a beech frame and plywood slates that are easy to put together with the provided tools. Plant&Moss was founded by James Moss and James Plant. (via Dezeen).

There’s just something about cyclists. They always seem on the pulse when it comes to green design and recycling. Bike Furniture Design was founded by Andy Gregg in 1990. Since then, the company has specialized in producing modern and contemporary furniture built primarily out of recycled bicycle parts. Constructed of a single piece of fiber glass, the Melaina Easy Chair was designed in 1970 by Rodolfo Bonetto for Driade. Bonetto began his career as a consultant for automobile manufactures. In 1958 he founded his own firm, and went on to win the Compasso d’ORO award in 1964, 1970, and 1979. (via Retro To Go).

Minneapolis-based Blu Dot has designed a line of furnishings for retail giant Urban Outfitters. Much of the design firm’s typical mid-century appeal remains, while the prices take a dip towards the more affordable. The +00 line features seating, storage, and small tables. Familiar Blue Dot lines and color schemes lend well to the aesthetic. A smart collection.
