Dirty Dishes. Your mom would be so proud.

DSCN0276 540x405 Dirty Dishes. Your mom would be so proud.

Vintage dirty pictures on ceramic plates you say?

Sometime in 2010, the folks behind Dirty Dishes had the slightly silly idea of using cheeky vintage photos and putting them on dinner plates. After doing lots of research, talking to lots of people, and receiving loads of positive feedback, they wondered if this idea was so silly after all. And thus Dirty Dishes was born. Dirty Rotten Peaches by Rebecca Wilson

dirty peaches3 Dirty Rotten Peaches by Rebecca Wilson

Chocolate-covered strawberries are to be expected, but ceramicist Rebecca Wilson turns fruit into enticing mini sculptures of the female form in a body of work titled “Eat Me; Keep Me.”

“In exploring the parallels between ‘valuable’ and ‘everyday’ I have drawn a symmetry of opposites between porcelain and confectionary items; both are similarly self indulgent, inspire desire and are coveted, but both are fundamentally frivolous. I aim to remove the formality of the materials so they simply drip with the desire of momentary self-indulgence.”

Wilson’s Dirty Rotten Peaches are cast in stained porcelain, and details are delicately piped using an icing bag. The fruits transform  into voluptuous ladies bottoms sprouting delicate gold leaves and other unmentionable creamy things.

2011 shotbyjake.com 9392 540x360 Pure Clay and Contemporary Clay at RH Gallery

Currently on view at RH Gallery, Pure Clay shares the work of Young Sook Park and Lee Ufan.

Young Sook Park and Lee Ufan first met in 1979 at Park’s gallery in Insadong, Seoul. United by a shared aesthetic rooted in the belief that there is great complexity in simplicity, their initial collaboration produced a minimalist cobalt blue brushstroke that was applied to a series of dinnerware including plates, bowls, tea pots, tea cups and platters. Their collaboration led to terracotta reliefs and large painted plates among other objects. Pure Clay will show these collaborative works for the first time in New York alongside a selection of Young Sook Park and Lee Ufan’s work.

In the adjacent gallery, Contemporary Clay highlights recent ceramic sculpture by a range of artists – Kathy Butterly, Nicole Cherubini, Julia Chiang, Naoki Koide, Jeff Koons, Klara Kristalova, Erin McCutcheon, John O’Reilly, Joyce Robins, Arlene Shechet, Shinique Smith, Paul Swenbeck, Ai Weiwei – many with immediately recognizable names.

Both shows run to August 20, 2011.

pano detail 2 540x404 Pano Candleholders

Gonçalo Campos has collaborated with Maria Bruno Néo on a new collection of candle holders. Produced in porcelain, the candle holders are by using cotton fabric as the temporary structure. This fabric technique – Pano – holds the ceramic in place and also allows for the production of unique shapes. When the ceramic is dried, the candle sticks are fired and during this process the fabric is burned away. The resulting material is delicate porcelain with truly individual appeal – holding on to the texture of the fabric.

These candle holders can be purchased online at www.goncalocampos.com.

Yes, you have seen this before. However, the popularity of the original set (limited to just 250) merits a second series, and this time each cup and saucer combo is indvidually numbered. Once again manufactured in Stoke-on-Trent, Ron English’s tea set is not only great pop art but great ceramic as well.
