Carmichael Gallery presents “Ghost of Old Highways,” an inventive short film from the band Lovett telling a story of love, the hunt, escapism, rebellion and fate with vivid imagery, original costumes and props, and an soundtrack that serves as more of a score to the suspenseful, fast-paced short film. The exhibit will also feature stills taken by the Dorn Brothers during the shooting of the film.
The opening reception is Wednesday, August 10, and the film will show through August 13. You can watch the trailer and download the film’s song here.

Carmichael Gallery opened LA Summer 2 : HEAVY HAPPY, a group exhibition curated by Esteban Schimpf and featuring works by emerging and mid-career artists Liz Craft, Sara Clendening, Chris Coy, Gerald Davis, Marc Horowitz, Pentti Monkkonen, Maha Saab, Sarah Sieradzki and Esteban Schimpf, on July 16, 2011. An encore to Instant LA Summer, which ran during August, 2010, HEAVY HAPPY is unmoved by vitreous polyresin and recruits its louche participants from chop-shops, tunnels of love, talk show sets and haunted manors. HEAVY HAPPY is a congregation of sphinxes assembled from relics carried westward on dirty winds.
The exhibition will run through August 6, 2011.

Shepard Fairy fans take note, the Carmichael Gallery of Contemporary Art now has a terrific range of works on consignment. Think very limited run screen prints (i.e. editions of 5) and originals. Fariey’s Alva Frontside of 2009, made with stencil and mixed media on collage paper, and the first from possible edition of 5 (only two made to date), caught my eye.
That work is shown above. Many others after the jump.

Published in June by Mark Batty, Poster Boy’s debut monograph, The War of Art!, celebrates his inventive reworking of commercial advertising. Poster Boy has undeniable wit, and he’s also neatly thread the fine line between cultural critic and vandal.
This weekend, Carmichael Gallery of Contemporary Art will launch the book in LA. The event includes book sales and a number of limited edition prints. No prizes for guessing the Carmichael’s thoughts on Poster Boy – proceeds from the sales will go to K.A.R.A.T.E., a new legal defense fund for street artists.
Images from the book, the flier for the event, and more information follow after the jump.

The Art Street Journal continues to grow and improve.
Volume II Issue I has just been released, and comes chock full of reviews and features covering the latest in contemporary art. Included are reviews of “Viva La Revolucion” at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego and Ben Eine at Lazarides. Photographer Boogie is covered, as is Dan Witz. The street art photography section comes back bigger and better, now expanded to 2 full pages.
In addition to the great material inside, the stock of paper has also been boosted. For those that haven’t got their mitts on a previous copy of The Art Street Journal (easy as hitting the above link), you are missing out. It is, in my humble opinion, one of the better outlets in our niche.

Serbian photographer Boogie will present new works in The Uncovering, opening at Carmichael Gallery on July 10, 2010. A departure from previous works, the exhibited photographs push towards a new color palette and complement the black and white portraits for which Boogie is best known. He returns home to Belgrade as well, finding inspiration in both human subject and nature. In all cases his ability to frame human narratives comes through clearly, Belgrade and New York proving rich backdrops.
The exhibition will run to August 7, 2010. The gallery is located at 5795 Washington BLVD, Culver City, CA.

June brings something of a blockbuster group show to Los Angeles’ Carmichael Gallery of Contemporary Art. With the title Booked, work on view in the exhibition draws from a whose who of street influenced contemporary art. Aside from names like SpY, Lucas Price, and Nick Walker (all of whom are seen in this preview), the “bigs” of Banksy, Shepard Fairey, and WK Interact are also on view.
In addition to the art works, Carmichael will host a sale of books from publishers Drago, Gestalten, Gingko Press, Murphey Design, Prestel, Rojo, SCB Distributors, Studiocromie, Very Nearly Almost, and Zupi.
Full list of artist and a few more preview images after the jump.
Booked runs June 5 July 3, 2010 at Carmichael Gallery of Contemporary Art, 5795 Washington BLVD, Culver City, CA.
