Artists Protesting Against Deitch for Blu Mural Take Down

An interesting video surfaced today, showcasing the LA artist community demonstrating against Jeffrey Deitch for taking down the Blu mural, that we reported on a while ago.

“This video from the MoCA parking lot protest and laser gun graffiti session provides some insight about how Jeffrey Deitch is perceived by the LA artist community post Blu whitewash. Intended or not, folks seems to think that Deitch censored an anti-war mural and displayed his own political views by doing so. The “MOCAca” tag is self-explanatory.” Via Animal.

Over the last few days Sara and I have read a lot, if not all, of the commentary that’s been posted online about the abrupt removal of our friend Blu’s mural on the exterior of Los Angeles’ Museum of Contemporary Art. Understandably, almost all of the discussion has been focused on the seemingly rash decision by Jeffrey Deitch, the newly appointed Director of MOCA, to remove the mural immediately after it was completed without any opportunity for debate and dialogue to happen before it’s removal.

Blu, an Italian muralist whose work has received much attention here, was one of the artists chosen by MoCA chief Jeffery Deitch to participate in the much hyped 2011 exhibition Art in the Streets. Blu completed his mural, but with 24-hours found that reaction had soured. The museum’s buffed the piece. Why? Animal doesn’t know and neither do I.

More looks after the jump.

Following coverage of Italian artist Blu’s recent work in Poland, let’s take a look at his “Global Warming” Mural in Berlin.

Again, the large scale mural taps into contemporary politics, but in this case may be slightly less successful. Still, the themes of environment and time do have relevance. (via Unurth).

While not exactly a lead up piece to his involvement in the tenth installment of Nuart (a now yearly street art festival in Stavenger, Norwary), Blu’s recent mural in Warsaw, Poland is indicative of the scope of recent work. The narrative is strong, as is the concept. It is the type of “go big” stuff I most appreciate in the genre.
