Jason Clay Lewis “Drill Baby” Sculpture

jason clay lewis 01 curatedmag Jason Clay Lewis Drill Baby Sculpture

Jason Clay Lewis, an Oklahoma-born, New York-based artist, has generated considerable attention for his most recent sculpture, “Drill Baby.” Politically driven, the sculpture finds a baby tattooed with a fierce narrative inspired by the BP oil spills. The connections are thinly veiled… ships dripping black and religious iconography flipped into odes to big oil commerce.

The use of the baby as base provides initial shock, and ties to Sarah Palin’s statement “Drill baby, drill.” (via If It’s Hip, It’s Here).

Lewis has exhibited throughout the United States, most recently at 31Grand in Brooklyn, NY.

stolen space 01 curatedmag KYKKELIKY By Gabriel Dubois at StolenSpace

Running from September 3 to 19, 2010, at StolenSpace (Old Truman Brewery, London), new works by Gabriel Dubois.

The fusion of both old and new, rural and urban can be seen in the abstract work of Gabriel Dubois. Elements which can be explained by influences from his background. Growing up in Van, Canada and spending a lot of time in his father’s painting studio, while also being fascinated in particular by his neighbourhood of Chinatown. During his childhood and teenage years he was fascinated with hand painted signs and in general with what he calls “the leftovers of the East Side”; added to that his years of skateboarding, his involvement with graffiti, Dubois had an interesting mix of influences from early on. Once he moved on and started to travel the world in places like Sri Lanka, India and Japan he started to also become interested in the visual language of these environs, further informing his vast well of inspiration.

For his debut solo show at StolenSpace, Gabriel Dubois has been preparing a new body of work since arriving in the East of London last September. Realizing there was no shortage of materials to be found in his new environment, Gabriel has continued working on his surface of choice, salvaged wooden panels. Along with works on paper he will also be creating a street sourced installation as well as an edition of limited screen prints.

Running through October 24, 2010, at the University of Michigan Museum of Art, UMMA Projects: Jakob Kolding.

Jakob Kolding’s work revolves around the experience of life in the contemporary built environment, particularly the relationships and contradictions that emerge between how architectural spaces are planned and how they are actively used. His collages, drawings, posters, and mixed-media sculptures incorporate a wide range of source material, sampling and mixing the visual idiom of modernist art and architecture, the language of sociological inquiry, and such popular cultural forms as hip-hop and electronic music, skateboarding, and soccer.

A selection of works from the exhibition follows.

Currently featured on Beck’s “Colorspace” blog, Mercedes Helnwein -

Born in Vienna, Austria, Mercedes Helnwein started writing and drawing at an early age, developing a deep fascination for both fields. In 2000 she began to divide her time between Los Angeles and Ireland, exhibiting her art regularly and writing short stories and essays for literary journals. With influences ranging from Southern Gothic traditions to the cartoons of Robert Crumb, to nineteenth Century Russian literature, American motel culture and the Delta blues, her work began to take on a style of it’s own, both in her fine-art as well as her writing. She has exhibited her work in solo exhibitions in New York, Berlin and Dublin, and with her latest show “East of Eden” at the Merry Karnowsky gallery in Los Angeles. In 2008 Simon and Schuster published her first novel “The Potential Hazards of Hester Day”.

“Avedon Fashion 1944–2000″ at MFA Boston

avedon fashion mfa boston front Avedon Fashion 1944–2000 at MFA Boston

Opening today at MFA Boston, Avedon Fashion 1944-2000.

Richard Avedon was one of the greatest image-makers of the twentieth century. He revolutionized fashion photography with his imaginative, spirited portrayals of the “good life” showing beautiful women wearing extraordinary clothes in irresistible settings, as well as memorable portrayals that are both elegant and reserved. The upbeat spirit and innovative design of his compositions caught the eye of editors and art directors at Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue—the primary magazines for which he worked—while his vision of the modern American woman, one of wit, individuality, and fast-lane glamour, captivated the public. His enormous success defined the role of the high-profile fashion photographer that we know today, and many of his images have become icons of photographic history.

Avedon’s career as a fashion photographer is displayed decade by decade in this exceptional traveling exhibition from the International Center of Photography in New York, the first comprehensive survey of Avedon’s fashion photography since 1978.

The exhibition runs until January 17, 2010.

KS “Random is Beautiful” at Above Second Gallery, Hong Kong

ks front KS Random is Beautiful at Above Second Gallery, Hong Kong

Random is Beautiful presents a series of portraits by Hong Kong artist KR. The exhibition opens on August 6, 2010, at Above Second Gallery, 31 Eastern Street, Sai Ying Pun, Hong Kong.

The artist’s statement suggests an interest in physiognomy, though the resulting works don’t quite prove a refined portrait technique. Still, there is a certain charm to KS’ painting, and an earnest interest in the subject. The presented works are admittedly personal, he says “In fact, drawing is a very subjective technique, because how you really want to express depends on yourself.” While true, this turns the portrait into something a touch nebulous. In short, Random is Beautiful gives space to KS’ vision of the face… not a bad vision, just one that skips between the lines of several disciplines.

More images from the show follow.
