“The Phillis Wheatley Elementary School has served the historic New Orleans African-American neighborhood of Tremé since it opened in 1955. Celebrated worldwide for its innovative, regionally-expressive modern design – the structure sustained moderate damage during the storms and levee breach of 2005. Although it is scheduled for demolition in Summer 2011, DOCOMOMO Louisiana is advocating for its restoration via adaptive reuse. “A Plea For Modernism” is narrated by actor Wendell Pierce (“The Wire”, “Treme”). “

Video | Introducing Miller House and Garden

12 May 2011, 17.30 | Posted in Architecture | No comments »

Commissioned by industrialist and philanthropist J. Irwin Miller and his wife Xenia Simons Miller in 1953, Miller House expands upon an architectural tradition developed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe—epitomizing the international Modernist aesthetic—with an open and flowing layout, flat roof and stone and glass walls. The rooms, configured beneath a grid pattern of skylights supported by cruciform steel columns, are filled with textiles that feature strong colors and playful patterns. Amid the residence’s large geometric gardens, its grandest feature is an allée of honey locust trees that runs along the west side of the house.

I love the juxtaposition of concrete and wood in Nendo’s design for a Puma showroom in Tokyo. The space, Puma House, serves as both showroom and press event center and utilizes timber staircases as displays. It is a great use of interior volumes and successfully balances a range of shapes and textures. (via Dezeen).
