slimane 540x446 Hedi Slimane @ The Curve | MOCA, Los Angeles

If you are aware of Hedi Slimane’s work you will be excited (if you are in Los Angeles) to go visit the exhibit at MOCA Pacific Design Center. It opened November 12th and will run through January 22nd, 2012.

The Museum of Contemporary Art presents Hedi Slimaneʼs California Song, the first West Coast solo museum exhibition of the photographerʼs work, on view at MOCA Pacific Design Center from November 12, 2011, through January 22, 2012. California Song spans the photographerʼs “California period” and traces his explorations of cycles of urban youth culture and artistic communities, through installations of photographic essays, exhibitions, and publications.

Slimane has achieved global recognition over the past decade for his discovery and presentation of emerging musicians and artists. His publications on London youth are among the first books published about the early days of the new British punk-rock movement at the beginning of this decade, capturing the birth of the first generation of Internet users, and redefining the concept of “fans” as an indie youth imagery that has developed globally through emerging social networks. Slimaneʼs widely followed photographic “diary,” created in 2006, established and popularized an entirely new genre—the online photo diary. via: MOCA PDC.

Cool concept. Maybe less than cool results? I love this idea, don’t get me wrong, but I just don’t think the end product is going to be what is expected.

For those of you that have that late night hankering to ping pong. Well, maybe it’s a bit more serious with a price tag like this (a cool $1,900)…

Following up on the success of the very limited (we’re talking 5 for sale) Chalk ping pong table for PUMA, NYC’s aruliden have developed a lighter & less expensive version that will be available exclusively through the Conran Shop. The new design features a black laminate surface for ultimate performance with a white powder coated metal frame, and sports a traditional net (as opposed to the chain-link net that was featured on the Chalk table). via: Arkitip

HLeeman02 540x302 Video | Hugh Leeman

Hugh Leeman is an artist living and working in San Francisco. He is self taught. He is helping those that go unnoticed and overlooked to be remembered.

At 18, he grabbed his backpack and traveled the world, hopping trains to see as much as he could. Three years later, he was in the Tenderloin for a six-month stopover. He’s not quite sure why he never left. Inspired by the work that Shepard Fairey and others were doing at the time with wallpaper glue from the hardware store, a world of possibilities exploded in his mind. via: The Bold Italic

Watch the video recently created to spotlight his social mission and hopes for the future of the Tenderloin after the jump.

dogtown01 540x303 Preview | Video | UVT Presents Wes Humpston for Oil & Water Artshow

If you are in Los Angeles, I’d highly recommend coming out for this show. It opens November 12th at Known Gallery.

Traditionally oil and water do not mix. The surf, hot rod and motorcycle cultures that grew out of Southern California from the 50’s-70s however, were all connected by the idea of personal freedom and expression-not conforming to the standards of the societies they existed in. For this show we are bringing together dozens of artists and craftsmen from these respective backgrounds and beyond-from legends to rookies. Each artists will be provided with a particular canvas: a blank board from City Fog Surfboards, helmets from Biltwell, gas tanks from Lowbrow Customs among other items.

Video of Wes Humpston after the jump. And if it doesn’t get you excited about the show, I don’t know what will.

3 540x405 Leon Keer – 3D Lego Street Painting

Leon Keer and Planet Streetpainting has unveiled new 3-D paintings at the Sarasota Chalk Festival in Florida. Keer was inspired by the recent Ego Leonard sculpture that washed ashore nearby. To see the story about the Lego castaway again, it was posted here on Curated a few days ago.

Planet Streetpaining is a collaboration of street artists based in the Netherlands. As Planet Streetpainting’s art director, Leon Keer is always fascinated about what history reveals. He tries to connect the historical events with current issues in this society. For the Sarasota Chalk Festival he has been inspired by the discovery of the Terracotta Army of China and Ego Leonard who washed ashore in Sarasota yesterday morning.

Colab – Flippa Sunglasses by Anthony Lister

10 November 2011, 15.00 | Posted in Design, Fashion | 2 comments »

image slide show new 161150 en 540x540 Colab Flippa Sunglasses by Anthony ListerThe one thing that I took away from my time in Paris, is if it’s in Colette, you should probably own it. These Colab sunglasses are no exception. If you can pull this look off, do it.

Anthony Lister (US/AUS) an Australian born painter turned Brooklyn based superhero. His work can be seen on both the street and gallery walls of London, NYC and Australia. Anthony explores the iconography of modern society. These icons take the form of cartoons and superheroes engrained in our youth by television and pop culture. Mr Lister’s work questions the reality and value of these modern gods and goddesses. There’s one thing for sure, Anthony Lister’s super power is the Midas touch.
