Scotland’s Recoat Gallery hosts the UK’s first comprehensive “Graffuturism” Exhibition titled “Rudimentary Perfection” from July 2, 2011. Curator Mark Lyken pulls together an impressive group of notable international artists linked by their innovative spirit & shared graffiti heritage.
Each of these artists has ventured down unique paths in their post graffiti output and each offers a radical take on expressive, figurative & letter-based abstraction. These works, while differing in approach & execution retain the sense of movement, assured marks & imperfect beauty of graffiti itself.
The participating artists include SheOne, Duncan Jago, Jaybo Monk, Matt W. Moore, Augustine Kofie, Nawer, Morten Andersen, Poesia, Derm and Mark Lyken.
On view to July 31, 2011.

Known for modifying preexisting murals, David Flores has been busy adding his signature flourish to some of JR’s recent wheatpastes in Los Angeles. The results are dynamic, adding subtle depth and intrigue to the faces. The mix of styles works well.

Phlegm’s latest, a mural titled “Funeral”, is right in line with the artist’s recent quality. Highly detailed, distinct in narrative, and with a dash of dark undertone. Phlegm is fast becoming my favorite muralist in the street art scene.

Life + Times celebrates the opening of the newest section of NYC’s Highline by getting up-close-and-personal with FriendsWithYou, who’ve produced an exciting instillation to mark the occassion. Here’s what they say, “New York’s High Line got a little color from its friends from the south, specifically the Miami-based artistic duo FriendsWithYou. Comprised of Samuel Borkson and Arturo Sandoval III, they’re infusing their whimsical, life-size blow up characters, collectively named “Rainbow City,” in 40 different shapes and sizes throughout the elevated concrete playground overlooking the Hudson River. To mark the grand opening of phase two of the High Line (which extends to 30th street), they’ve teamed up with AOL to present a unique and interactive experience, a beacon of magic and color created to invoke the spirit of play in all those who engage. Here, Life+Times chatted with the team behind FriendsWithYou to find out how they’re about to single-handedly adjust the aesthetic of New York’s concrete jungle.”

JR’s INSIDEOUT initiative, which encourages people to portray their local heroes through large scale photographs, gets a punch in the form of an interactive installation at the George Pomdiou Museum in Paris. The exhibition includes a printing facility and a series of new murals from the artist himself. Photo Booth allows visitors the opportunity to to print out their own images and paste them where they wish. The Photo Booth murals and printing facilities will be open through September 5th. In collaboration with Native Shoes, FriendsWithYou opens “:)” on June 10, 2011. The exhibition finds the Miami-based duo creating an interactive experience through the entirety of the new The Hole space on the Bowery.
Past the spinning neon candies in our storefront windows, you will find a garden of colorful beings raise up around you. Skip over smiling puddles on the gallery floor to see giggle sticks, smirking smoke flumes, splat-happy wall works and a grinning ghost or two. In the left rear gallery, kinetic painting blink at you from the walls as their heads roll around each other. On the right, a massive chandelier of an inflatable sculpture fills the room with energy and light.
It is all about experience. And, of course, fun! The show runs through August 6, 2011.
