Beautiful photographs of American author Gore Vidal. The two of us have no connection, other than that we grew up on the same block, in totally different eras. Slimane’s diary captures with tremendous detail Vidal’s personal style.

“Mark Seliger: Listen” at Steven Kasher Gallery

18 February 2011, 18.30 | Posted in photography | 1 comment »

seliger 02 curatedmag Mark Seliger: Listen at Steven Kasher Gallery

One week remains to check out Mark Seliger: Listen at Steven Kasher Gallery. Best known for his portraits, Seliger includes some landscapes here, but the winning photographs are of people – nudes and tattooed faces.

Mark Seliger: Listen is in a sense a memento mori, a tribute to his late father. It follows in the tradition of photographers and painters such as Weston, Stieglitz, and Cézanne who, at a certain age, focus on elegiac studies of the nude, the landscape, and the still life. The pictures are Seliger’s meditations through slow looking. These photographs speak to us metaphorically of the eternal themes of love and death. They pay homage to Seliger’s forebears Brandt, Kertesz, Hosoe, and Penn. The nuanced tones of the platinum palladium convey the rich textures of Seliger’s sensibilities.

On view through February 26, 2011.

Chris Milliman’s latest details the fan experience from Flanders. Milliman cast his lens on spectators at cycling events, catching them in moments of relaxation and relief. The range is terrific – both in subject and in action – typical of Milliman’s great sporting output but also unique to this specific environment.

What we’ve seen from Milliman in detailing BMX, Horseshoes, and Ice Fishing continues in Drink Smoke Flandershonest portrayal of unique moments with universal appeal.
