Jason Hull is repurposing (not pristine) vintage cameras from the 1950s and 1960s by turning them into swell nightlights. Hull, a long-time employee at Pixar, created them to sell at the company’s craft fair in December but says he’ll “put any unsold nightlights up on etsy” afterwards. via: Laughing Squid

I am  sucker for old fixtures, and these are the real deal.

I don’t use this word often, but there is some seriously wonderful stuff over at Portland-based Schoolhouse Electric & Supply Co., which just launched their new website earlier this month. The company made their name when founder Brian Faherty uncovered a cache of forgotten cast-iron molds for glass shades in a warehouse and realized they were for making old-school–literally “old school” hanging lamps that many an American public student will recognize (above, center). They were at their most popular in the first half of the 20th Century, but the NYC public school I attended in the ’70s had them. Faherty restored the molds and started making them again. An interesting idea from Korean designer Joonhuyn Kim. As practical as it is to have a flat light bulb, say in regards to shipping perhaps, or storage, or even in the carry home… I think this may be too smart for it’s own good. What it gains in efficiency of transport, it looses in uniformity of light. Not to say I’m not disappointed I can’t get a few of these for my apartment (sadly, they aren’t in production). Because how cool is a flat light bulb? Images after the jump.

Nothing like gorgeous design that serves a utilitarian purpose. Kristýna Pojerová of the Czech republic came up with, and executed the idea for a hanging lamp that doubles as a greenhouse,  in an attempt to create a more aesthetic method for growing herb gardens indoors. More looks after the jump.

The Tumble Lamp series, designed by Dino Sanchez, are a series of 9″ lamps made of solid ash, meant to sit upright or “tumbled” on their side. The clean, minimal design allows for integration into almost any setting or room in your spot.

Patrick Martinez just released a smaller, more affordable version of his signature neon art yesterday with Known Gallery’s online store. With only 20 pieces available, some have probably already ended up in virtual carts and wishlists. The 12″ x 18″ sign is signed by the artist and running for $475.

Evan Clabots of Nonlinear Studio recently debuted the Cantilever Floor Lamp, which features adjustable height for all your lighting needs. The lamp shade sits on a small secondary pole that is cantilevered off of the lamp’s vertical pole. The cantilevered arm ends in a ring that slides over the vertical pole of the lamp. The weight of the shade twists the ring causing it to “lock” or binds on the wooded pole and keeps the shade at any height.

Japanese artisti Shinobu Koizumi designed “Light in a Drawer,” inspired by fairy tales with hidden treasures and dreamy illuminations.

Each drawer is made of frosted acrylic with a wooden front facade, and the lights are installed at the back of the drawers. The plastic construction means the light can be seen peeking from around the sides of each box, even if the drawer is shut. Further playing into the whimsical ideas of surrounding light, the handles are composed of the bases of electric light bulbs.

Spanish design studio Estudi Ribaudí, led by Jordi Ribaudí, debuted a collection of table, floor and pendant lamps resembling trees for the Catalan manufacturer Faro. Aptly titled “Tree,” the series of black and white lamps was inspired by the interaction between humans and their natural environment.”

Fouette is a series of hanging, inter-connected elliptical rings that give off a soft glow. Niamh Barry designed Fouette to display at Lux Craft, a new exhibition within Origiin: The Contemporary Craft Fair at the London Design Festival.
