Oscar Magnus Narud’s ‘Keel’ collection employs an ingenious joinery solution in which keel-shaped legs are fitted into a rough Douglas Fir table top, and secured underneath with a hefty Ashwood wedge. “Keel” draws inspiration from traditional Norwegian furniture, but is sympathetic to the contemporary domestic environment. The table can easily be taken apart for moving or storage.

Rhode Island’s Studio Dunn unveiled the Heiress Collection during ICFF.

The say of the new series, “Inspired by the richness of American heritage, its tradition of invention, and its resulting prosperity. Paul Menand’s Triplette Chair successfully hides one of its core characteristics – the series is totally stackable – to lend an air of mystery. Pop one chair off the stack, reveal the second and then as if by shake of wand, there is a third as well. This is the second version of Menand’s design, which employs terrifically subtle color contrast too.

Awesome children’s stuff from Lil Snob – “AALTO + AALTO is a design office based in Finland who’s goal is to “create special everyday objects with a strong identity and story.” Featured above is a prototype of the treehouse-inspired MAJA bunk beds. If Dad can’t build your kids’ dream treehouse this summer, at least you know where to find an alternative.”

Being left handed, using an pencil presents some smudgy problems. However, using pencils to make a chair doesn’t have such issue, and that’s exactly what designer Anon Pairot has done. His chair utilizes more pencils than I can count and is rather successful in form too.

Jasper Morrison’s latest design for Vitra, the “Hal” chair, was conceived to meet the needs of any function. Stick it in the hall, round the dining table, or even whip outside. The seat shell is molded plastic which ensures comfort and contrasts quite nicely with the simple wooden legs. Varying colors make the chair even more versatile.

Straight from Red Hook, Brooklyn, Uhuru Design showed their new War Craft Line during New York Design Week. The collection is the firm’s third “local materials” set, this time using reclaimed materials from the USS North Carolina. The ship was built in Brooklyn Navy Yard during the 1930s and lived a decorated life at sea.

The line includes the 16/45 end tables, named in reference to the bullets employed on the USS North Carolina, and the a coffee table dressed in dazzle camo. Additionally, the BB-55 rocker takes cues from the ship’s hull shape and the Mark-8 Room Divider again uses bullets as style cues. In total, the collection turns history into contemporary furnishing with a solid sustainable twist.

Here’s a look at some new design from Itoki for 2011. Materially, the furniture comes from a Japanese government mandate to employ cedar, a now abundant wood there.  In response, Itoki offers three new pieces including the Hida Chair (above), table and screen. (via Industrial Design Served).
