The man behind the Staircase installation at Tate Modern takes on a new set of ideas in his Specimen Series, which features a new set of nylon fabric household objects found in his own home. The series explores “perception of our surroundings and how one is able to construct memory from a space.” His Specimen Series, along with two other exhibits titled Fallen Star 1/5 and Home Within a Home, will show at Lehmann Maupin Gallery beginning September 8 through October 22.

Hailing from Ireland, Claire-Anne O’Brien is a recent graduate of the Royal College of Art. Her work finds intersection in textiles and furniture, and in the case of the Knit Stools strikes the balance with undeniable charm.

About the stools -

Inspired by elements of the knitted stitch itself such as rings and loops, the structures are revealed and celebrated through exaggerated scale in bold and textured forms. Lambswool and Sheeps wool, in a mix of hand and machine knit stitches, are constructed into playful statement pieces.

Philadelphia’s Pentimenti Gallery shared the terrific work of Matthew Cox at Pulse (open through March 6, 2011). Cox embroiders on x-ray, forming works that are rich in color, texture, and (obviously) juxtaposition of material. Certainly a show highlight.
