If you thought you couldn’t fall anymore in love with Swoon, here is another chance. The Music Box, her interactive musical shanty town collaboration opened in New Orleans October 22nd. A second performance will happen on the 19th of November. And a third will take place on December 10th. A press release from the show sums it up as such:
Visitors can interact with this musical shantytown’s singing walls, heartbeat-triggered percussion machine, organ staircase and weather sensitive oscillators. Three monthly live performances are bringing together stellar groups of local and international musicians to play orchestrated works on these “instruments.” Quintron, the musician and local legend, conducts this experimental shantytown orchestra.
The Music Box is an important and exciting prelude to the building of Dithyrambalina, an interactive sound sculpture in the form of a permanent three-story house. This project is being led by the influential street artist Swoon, who is known for her community-driven collaborative endeavors. Swoon has designed the house, but will rely on collaborating artists to bring the Dithyrambalina to life. via: Juxtapoz.

Over the past week Marina Abromović, or the center pieces and rotating heads she unveiled on the tables at the 2011 MOCA Gala in Los Angeles, had stirred up quite the controversy. Mostly from legendary dancer Yvonne Rainer.
While Abramović was in Los Angeles this week auditioning performers to become living centerpieces of sort at the gala dinner tables (they will be kneeling beneath tables, poking their head through holes in them), Rainer has been circulating a letter, addressed to MOCA Director Jeffrey Deitch and signed by such art-world luminaries as critic Douglas Crimp, calling the work “exploitative” and a “grotesque spectacle.”
But in its report on the controversy, Artinfo.com published long quotes from one version of the letter, and got a response from Abramović: “I hope the performance itself will bring some kind of dignity, serenity, and concentration to the normal situation of a gala, and actually change the energy of the space and bring the performance into an everyday life situation.” via: Culture Monster – L.A. Times
As with most reaction to a performance or piece of art before it is actually unveiled, it was mostly hyperbole (go figure) and the performers left the event with their dignity in tact.

If you are in Los Angeles, I’d highly recommend coming out for this show. It opens November 12th at Known Gallery.
Traditionally oil and water do not mix. The surf, hot rod and motorcycle cultures that grew out of Southern California from the 50’s-70s however, were all connected by the idea of personal freedom and expression-not conforming to the standards of the societies they existed in. For this show we are bringing together dozens of artists and craftsmen from these respective backgrounds and beyond-from legends to rookies. Each artists will be provided with a particular canvas: a blank board from City Fog Surfboards, helmets from Biltwell, gas tanks from Lowbrow Customs among other items.
