Seattle-based artist Michael Leavitt took on the art world with these mini action figures depicting artists such as Jasper Johns, Jeff Koons, Richard Serra, Takashi Murakami, and others. In a way, then, all of these artists are the stars of his new exhibit at Jonathan LeVine Gallery. Leavitt told ArtInfo that his idea to parody some of art’s most brilliant and expensive names came from a lack of accessibility.
“I truly wish they were more accessible both to me and to the general public,” he said. “I think the contemporary art world’s mystification of the artist has been a sad fallout from too many wrong-doings for too many years. I understand that much of it is necessary to build up a mythology and market value for an artist’s work. But there’s a balance to strike between the economics and wider mass appeal for the art world.”
Well, mass appeal he wants, mass appeal we get. There’s nothing more accessible, both literally and figuratively, than miniature action figures that can fit in the palm of your hand.
“Art Star Royalty” will run at Jonathan LeVine gallery through October 8.

Sleepbox combines fantastic modernist design with creative functionality. The Sleepbox brand is designed by Arch Group, a Russian architecture and design firm. Just about everyone has experienced one of those painfully long layovers which can take days to recover from. Sleepbox offers a solution to those types of experiences by placing these attractive looking rental sleeping chambers into airports and other transportation hubs. Moscow’s Sheremetyevo International Airport has installed some trial units. More looks after the jump.

Earlier this week, eBay Seller “Freehand Profit” sold this one of kind Adidas Storm Trooper helmet at auction. The item description reads:
A few weeks back my homie Noah Scalin, creator of Skull A Day, approached me to work on a new project called “Star Wars Remix”. StarWarsRemix.com launched August 30th with an entry from Noah himself, make sure you check out his Aspirin Stormtroopers. Since then they’ve continued the creative flow with blasters set to kill, even Charlton from Burger 365 came up with the Twist TIE Fighter. In the spirit of the numerous sneaker gas masks from the Branding Wars/MASK365 I chose to create a stormtrooper helmet made from the exclusive Adidas X Star Wars Superskate Mids. This was the first piece that required more than one pair of shoes to create and it gave me hell. I pushed through and couldn’t be happier with the result.
This piece was created as an art piece but can also be worn. Great way to stand out at a convention or a great one-of-a-kind cherry on a great Star Wars collection. Made using 2 pairs of authentic Adidas X Star Wars Superskate Mids and 1 EFX Studio Stormtrooper prop replica.
The item sold for $2125. More images after the jump.

Tjalf Sparnaay is a Netherlands-born, London-based artist whose oil paintings are ridiculously hyper-realistic. When I first saw these images I assumed they were photographs. Sparnaay is an expert at taking everyday, throwaway items such as discarded Cola cans and a bag of chips, removing the items from their environment, and turning them into textured works of art, no shadow, wrinkle or crevice overlooked. Sparnaay calls his style “Mega-Realism.” More about the artist here.

Beginnning September 28, “Boys I Know,” a group exhibit showcasing the works of 5 multimedia artists, will show at Rouge 58. Artists include Milo Carney, A. Jesse Jiryu Davis, Ryan Day, Matt McCormick and Christopher Ser, and give the exhibit its title because of their relationship with curator Pebbles van Peebles. From the gallery:
Boys I Know” is the love child of nightlife goddess and all around Renaissance woman of the concrete jungle, Pebbles van Peebles. In an effort to explore and expose the art-making that surrounds all of us in our day to day lives, Pebbles reached out to five male artists she knows, living and working in New York. Some make their living off of art others just engage in the creative process on the side but all have a voracious commitment to creating. This constant and consistent involvement in creation is inspirational in a climate where regurgitation and consumption seem to be all that we are charged with. Rather than sit back and take in, these artists serve as an example to all of us that making and doing are oftentimes what render life worth living and this exhibit is a celebration of that.
The exhibit runs through October 9.
