peck 540x269 Preview | Micheal Peck at Metro Gallery

Metro Gallery in Victoria Australia will be opening a Michael Peck exhibit “The Landing” on November 14th. Peck’s work mixes a monochromatic photographic style of painting with subject matter reminiscent of 50’s style propaganda.

Themes of isolation and displacement have continually reoccurred in my paintings over time. I’m always seeking to create a tension in the work; the suspense in the feeling that something is just about to happen, as if the landscape could suddenly swallow everything and everyone up. I think art is a good place to be able to engage with our anxieties. We live in a social, political and environmental climate that is pretty hostile, yet we do our best to mask our fears. I think that art provides a context where people’s fears can be corroborated; it helps us to know that others share the same concerns and helps us feel less alone. Ironically there is an abstract comfort in recognition of this shared isolation.

g1 540x348 Guns | Sculpture installation by David Cerny

David Cerny brings out the big guns with this installation in Prague.

Czech artist David Černý’s ‘Guns’ installation returned to Prague this summer where it is suspended by wires in the courtyard of the Artbanka Museum of Young Art. Earlier in the summer between June 20 and July 1, Černý’s ‘Pink Tank no. 23′ was installed on a floating pontoon on the Vltava river between Střelecký ostrov and Smetanovo nábřeží as part of the ‘Week of Freedom’ project. In a photo dated October 8, 2011, a visitor to the Artbanka Museum hoists his hands up and makes his own guns.

Shepard Fairey | Asbury Park

asbury1 540x360 Shepard Fairey | Asbury Park

Shepard Fairey and the crew at OBEY recently took to the walls of Asbury Park New Jersey. The murals were created in connection with the Jonathan Levine Gallery exhibit “Revolutions” featuring the album cover art of Shepard Fairey. The OBEY blog notes:

We knocked out some ambitious installations and Shepard threw down a couple of mind blowing DJ sets but most of all it was a real pleasure being introduced to a place that still has its community in the right mind set.  We especially wanted to Thank, Jonathan LeVine, Juicy Jenn, and all the locals that showed up and gave their support.

DSC 0103 540x358 Pulse LA | Dean Project

Here is some more good stuff from the Pulse L.A. show. Dean Project was showing these fantastic pieces from Tim Berg and Rebekah Myers.

Continuing with their exploration of ideas of material value and the consequences of the actions we take to satisfy our desires, Berg-Myers have created a new body of works. This current exhibition is meant to provide the viewers with objects-situations where our choices are put to the test in how we understand the value of the things we do.

Some of the works in the exhibition have titles such as “All that glitters” and “As good as gold” which echo
marketing tools employed in our contemporary culture to attract with a promise of guaranteed   satisfaction if consumed.
