Treats! magazine recently published a video documenting some behind the scenes action from a Ben Watts shoot. The title of the video is “Breaking Away.” The shoot takes a page from INSA’s playbook with the theme of girls and bikes. Check out the video after the jump.

These photos has been tumbled, reblogged and and shared exponentially, but INSA’s “Girls on Bikes” installation is an ongoing project. Like the title suggests, “Girls on Bikes” works with volunteer models, bikes, and large scale, public painted walls by INSA. From INSA:
In this set of photographic works INSA orchestrates a conflicting dialogue between all the elements and explicitly subordinates the value of his own street art to both the possessed object of the bike and the overtly sexualized female presence. Thus questioning our individual perceptions of ownership of public space, of sexuality and of belongings.

As part of there latest exhibition Animate Everything opening today (Thursday July 21, 2011) Protein invited INSA to create one of his innovative GIF-ITTI pieces on the side of there new head quarters- 18 Hewett St. INSA spent 4 days painting and repainting the entire side of this 3 story building to produce the final animated wall entitled ‘Summer Spectrum’.
“Gif-itti is a new form of animated wall art, pioneered by UK artist INSA. They are wall paintings that can only truly be viewed online, where these days the majority of ’street’ art is seen. These works exaggerate the ephemeral nature of graffiti as each layer is painted instantly over the last. Mixing retro internet technology and labour intensive painting, INSA creates slices of infinite un-reality, cutting edge art for the tumblr generation.”
Animate Everything runs to August 15, 2011.

Currently on view at RH Gallery, Pure Clay shares the work of Young Sook Park and Lee Ufan.
Young Sook Park and Lee Ufan first met in 1979 at Park’s gallery in Insadong, Seoul. United by a shared aesthetic rooted in the belief that there is great complexity in simplicity, their initial collaboration produced a minimalist cobalt blue brushstroke that was applied to a series of dinnerware including plates, bowls, tea pots, tea cups and platters. Their collaboration led to terracotta reliefs and large painted plates among other objects. Pure Clay will show these collaborative works for the first time in New York alongside a selection of Young Sook Park and Lee Ufan’s work.
In the adjacent gallery, Contemporary Clay highlights recent ceramic sculpture by a range of artists – Kathy Butterly, Nicole Cherubini, Julia Chiang, Naoki Koide, Jeff Koons, Klara Kristalova, Erin McCutcheon, John O’Reilly, Joyce Robins, Arlene Shechet, Shinique Smith, Paul Swenbeck, Ai Weiwei – many with immediately recognizable names.
Both shows run to August 20, 2011.

James Royal captured first prize at the Bend Winterfest Ice Carving Contest for his spectacular Merman. Sponsored by Dockers, the event found hearty fellows starting their chainsaws and transforming blocks of ice to beautiful sculptures. My personal favorite was James Waldron’s tremendous lion. David Wynter, who learned to carve ice as a student at the Culinary Institute of America, produced an ode to his other favorite hobby – motorcycling – and turned out a crowd favorite.
The 2011 OnPoint Community Credit Union Bend WinterFest is the largest winter festival in the Northwest.

News from Mark Ward -
I’ve been working with the world famous ustwo to produce a signature artist pack for their amazing Granimator iPad app.
Granimator is a sound based wallpaper creator app for the iPad that offers users a fully immersive touch and sound experience. Draw, tap, pinch, drag and interact with the ridiculous amount of distorted elements I created to make your own insane compositions and soundscapes using the iPad’s multi-touch function. Share the wallpaper by sending it to an iPhone, or with friends on Twitter, Flickr, Facebook or on Granimator.com. To top it off, while your creating your masterpiece, your ears will be serenaded by the sweet sounds and SFX of ‘Embarrassment to Sound’.
