jay z lead cat Complexs Guide to Jay Zs Art Obsession

With the recent release of Kanye and Jay-Z’s Watch the Throne album, fans are scrutinizing and analyzing Jay-Z lyrics like never before. Perhaps this is because Jay-Z’s catalog stretches back over a decade, so comparing a modern-day Hov to a 1991-Hov is easy to do with the amount of material at hand.

Complex, however, took it a step further by going through Jay-Z’s history of art mentions in songs, from name dropping Basquiat to bragging about his Warhols, and many more in between.

braincar1 540x405 Braincar Sculpture by Olaf Mooij

Artist Olaf Mooij’s “Braincar” mobile sculpture is something out of a futuristic sci-fi flick. “Braincar” uses an old used car and features a large brain dominating the entire back end of the vehicle. The sculpture captures and stores images and video from its everyday travel, and the footage is then remixed and projected from within the brain, visible to all those passing.

Mooij’s previous works often explore the inner workings of motor vehicles and how they may connect with the human psyche.

Banksy is taking on the role of TV producer with “The Antics Roadshow,” an hour-long special to air on UK’s channel 4 on August 13.  The show will chart “the history of behaving badly in public, from anarchists and activists to attention seeking eccentrics” and has been dubbed an “incomplete guide to total anarchy.”

“Explaining his reasoning behind the show, Banksy said: ‘Basically I just thought it was a good name for a TV programme and I’ve been working back from there’.

Narrated by Kathy Burke and produced by Jamie D’cruz, The Antics Roadshow examines the stories behind some of the most audacious stunts of recent times and what motivates the perpetrators, from mindless boredom to heartfelt political beliefs.

It includes a world exclusive first interview with the man responsible for putting the turf Mohican on Winston Churchill’s head.”

Hayashi Natsumis Levitation Self Portraits 6 Levitation Self Portraits by Hayashi Natsumi

Altering reality in the perception of the viewer, photographer Hayashi Natsumi’s self portraits each depict her in mid-air, framed by everyday objects and situations. Natsumi planned every detail of each shot, from the colors in the background to the clothes she wears to the moment she leapt in the air, seemingly defying gravity, so that outside of her levitation, all appears normal.
