Eric Yahnker’s Cracks of Dawn, an exhibition mounted in LA’s Chinatown at Kunsthalle LA, is an ambitious exhibition. Massive scale charcoal drawings dominate the walls… depicting everything from a cigar smoking Mother Theresa (in The Big Con-onization (Mutha from Calcutta)) to a rift on Dorothea Lange’s iconic Migrant Mother. Yet, what really impresses are the mixed-media sculpture, particularly the above shown Stitches n’ Dishes. The work at once displays Yahnker’s terrific understanding of material and his unique narrative wit. His ability to take on both popular culture and art history with equal panache is quite rare.

The show is one not to miss. On view through February 20, 2011.
