Patrick Martinez x Quintin x Curated Contest

Conceptual artist Patrick Martinez says, “Arizona Diamondbacks owner Ken Kendrick is a strong supporter of the SB1070 bill. The concept of this video (available after the jump) was to challenge the main ideas of the bill and juxtapose those ideas with the fact that some players of the Diamondbacks represent the very people the bill targets. SB1070 is a step backwards in terms of progression and should be dissolved for good. This is a slap in the face to the people that have fought for equal rights.”
We’re happy to be able to offer an opportunity to win on of Martinez’s”Arizona Wetbacks” caps, produced by Quintin. To win offer a comment in the form of a poem or short paragraph with your thoughts on why the SB 1070 Bill in Arizona is unjust.
Watch the video after the jump, and learn more about the hat as well.

“Arizona Wetbacks” a Racist Republicans X Arizona collab
-custom logo designs, embroidery, mexican blanket pattern and acrylic on a bootleg new era baseball cap created from scratch 2010
-Patrick created the hat pieces to visually show the connection between the racist republicans that run the “Arizona Diamondbacks”(a major league baseball team) and how they are helping to push the Arizona SB1070 law by generous funding.
-It was re-named the team with the racist inspired name Arizona Wetbacks because Patrick believe it’s more of a fit based on the racist actions the owners are taking with the SB1070 bill which they are helping to advance.
-Patrick created three hats for the three players on the diamondbacks of latin decent (Juan Guitterez, Gerardo Parra, and Rodrigo Lopez) that will be celebrated on the field then asked for their papers when they leave it.
This bill is a step backwards in terms of progression. It is also a giant slap in the face to the many people that fought for equal rights in the past as well as the present. The SB1070 law has the feeling of the beginning stages of apartheid.

Grand Canyon divides
Those who clean our offices
Those who sit at desks
what century are we living in?
when to be different is considered a sin…
the colonizers straight jacked these lands,
from the natives that lent them a hand.
and they want us to get the fuck out??? nah…
“we shall not be moved!” i will continue to shout!
Those hats are great and on point.
This is an amazingly beautiful collaboration and display of the current situation we’re in. Wonderfully shot, I’m very interested in seeing collaborations like these come to life to help make the blind see.

ro
brilliant, i love this piece, keep putting out that shit that flows like fluid . shine baby boy shine deuces
The tyrants behind me with sirens cause the color of my skin is’nt like them
I will not obey for the land I stand was my ancestors way before the white men
I raise my right hand like Che at every thought of this new world order
In disgust how my amendments are being aborted by Brewer and her supporters
A hundred miles away from the border at a check point being searched and harassed
I hid my Nana’s cancer medicine with the white people in front of my Honda and they allowed them to pass
This is just a flash of the grim realities we face day to day
Of being a descendant of a different nationality in a republican racist state
A sign of the times right above on the dotted line
Says I’m liable to be fined, should I lose mine
Shipped back to sender, survey says “access denied.”
I live right, abide, applied for papers, I tried…
Arrested on sight, for trespassing and bad profile
I thought my identity was under my skin
but it’s a crisis and my nerves are worn thin
I also want safety, peace, for me and my family.
The officer disagreed, said I had no idea
He sullied my name, used and abused his power
but i won’t feel sorry for crossing the border.
I keep hearing, “They’re taking over our country.”
A 3rd World Class Citizen hasn’t the ability.
With fences and weaponry that condenses the boundary.
With Arizona State lines and numerous minute men.
State wide is the sin of them.
To have check points and the brown masses get the harassment.
Our Governor relaxes in her plush palace while the “Invaders” work for wages under the table.
Place food? They’re barely able.
So they break rules to barely make it.
I live in a brainwashed State of Hate.
Where my citizenships in question day-to-day.
Born and raised only to grow with “looks” of being here illegally.
I need the security from these thieves.
The politician henchmen who stole my days of peace,
My family tree roots are deeper than you.
Don’t ask me for my papers; I’ve got a bloodline that speaks the truth.
Now, I’m not about the division of skin.
I’m about the rights of ALL people not being obstructed by the government.
People in search of better life isn’t the problem.
It lays within the solution you’ve presented us with… Now solve it.
It’s fucked up.
No homies to say ‘what up?’
Keeping people down.
They just wanna live.
These people from our town!
Laws created to deprive.
The state’s a mess.
You shouldn’t get support for producing hate
What this results in anybody can guess
Using jobs as bait
To target innocent human beings
The government with the ultimate scheme
Result: Mass fleeings!
What the fuck happened to the “American Dream”?
I can’t believe we still have to protest this crap bill!

in this day and age,
our progress is little to be proud of,
trying to live in a “free” space,
and a legal ID isnt enough.
pull me over,
and show you proof,
your people aren’t native,
so show me yours too.
the land of the free,
if you can read the small print.
even if you can,
your skin can’t have tint.
SB1070 => Dehumanization of individuals
How can we tell our children they are human beings,
autonomous individuals with free will and joy,
when their brown skin will threaten both the second they step foot in Arizona?
We are human beings too, don’t worry about whether we were able
to find the right application and send it in for approval,
just to calm your fear that I snuck in,
plotting your demise.
We were born on this earth just like you,
we were raised in a culture just like yours,
we want family, opportunity, and human rights.
But now you want to call me illegal?
My existence is illegal?
I am not allowed to exist?
Until I show you my papers, that is
