Canadian artist Adam Brooks has something of a celebrity obsession. This extends beyond actual people to action and super heroes. Brooks has even recorded a hit internet song about Britney Spears.
Like all good artists, obsession yields a defined oeuvre. In Brooks’ case an interest in celebrity generates a platform for comment on cultural alienation. His celebrities reveal perceived relationships – ones brought on through media onslaught. In his work there is beauty, and there is sadness. There is also, above all, well articulated points of commonality that lend well to easy reading of the paintings.
