Substitute Teacher investigates models of authority, particularly those reverse traditional roles. There is also emphasis on alternative forms of teaching – whether stemming from simple curiosity or through experience. The result is an exhibition that plays with categorization and attempts to use various media as teacher.

As an idea – art as teacher – there’s nothing groundbreaking, but in the sum the notion of art as substitute teacher (“any being, situation, or object that has the potential to impart knowledge”) yields some inventive work.

The exhibition remains on view at Atlanta Contemporary Art Center until May 16, 2010.

An example, from Mira Schor, after the jump.
