The sly view of New York drawn through the eye of illustrator Charles Addams range from charming to creepy. In this range, Addams has created a vast assemblage of water colors, pencil sketches, cartoons, and more, which most famously, occasionally, cover the New Yorker. His productive output, in all its glory, is subject of Charles Addams’s New York, a charming exhibition at the Museum of the City of New York. Placing emphasis on fun and mischief, the exhibition details New York through the eyes of the artist.

A short section on Addams’s evolution as a cartoonist (particularly in developing his New York characters and scenes) provides context, but again the show is mostly about having a good time.

On view through May 16, 2010.

A second example of Mr. Addams’s New York follows.
