The Milwaukee Art Museum came into being in 1957, when two local art groups merged. These originated in the 1880s, the thriving port of Milwaukee forging a City of diverse immigrant cultures. Today, the museum’s situation on Lake Michigan reminds of Milwaukee’s industrial past. The two buildings that make up the current spaces – designed by Saarinen and Calatrava respectively – remind of Milwaukee’s world class collections.

While I’m particularly drawn to the American Decorative Arts installations (driven by cooperative work with the Chipstone foundation), MAM also delivers well thought out contemporary exhibitions. Above is a video of Calatrava’s magnificent wings in full flight.
