Frank Auerbach at the Courtauld Gallery

Frank Auerbach’s paintings and sketches capture a period of rebuilding in London, and the rest of the UK. Recovering from the bombings on WWII, which destroyed wide swaths of the Capital, architects and planners envisioned a modern, hygienic city. Auerbach, a Jewish artist born in Berlin, cast his eye on the rebuilding projects leading to a rare series depicting the period.

A full review of the exhibition, entitled London Building Sites: 1952-62, ran in today’s New York Times. This is the first exhibition to bring the together this group of works and it runs at the Courtauld Institute through January 17, 2009.
